ABERCROMBY, JOHN,
A Trip Through the Eastern Caucasus with a Chapter on the Languages of the Country.
. Edward Stanford, 1889. 1st edition. 8vo. xvi, 376 pp. partly uncut. Frontispiece, 6 plates & 15 engraved illustrations in the text and on one folding plate, 2 folding maps and 1 coloured. Complete. Original blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Lightly rubbed cloth covers with a hint of wear to spine ends and corners. There is a thinning in the right lower corner of the title page due to the deletion of a stamp. Partly deleted inscription on the f.e.p. Otherwise book is in good to very good condition. Pages are clean, no foxing. ? The author had a particular interest in local dialects so there is a chapter on the structure and affinities of the seven main languages of the area, but the book is a general account of the countryside and its inhabitants. John Abercromby, 5th Baron Abercromby of Aboukir and Tullibody (1841-1924) Archaeologist Second son of the 3rd Baron, he succeeded his brother to the title in 1917. He entered the army in 1858, retiring in 1870 with the rank of Lieutenant in the Rifle Brigade. He served as Vice-President of the Folklore Society and President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. His publications included "A trip through the Eastern Caucasus" (1889); "Pre- and Proto-historic Finns", (2 vols, 1898); and "A study of the Bronze Age Pottery of Great Britain and Ireland" (2 vols, 1912). Dying without male heirs, he endowed the Abercromby Chair of Archaeology at the University of Edinburgh and bequeathed ca 2,500 volumes, 400 pamphlets on archaeology, ethnology and linguistics, and a substantial body of correspondence and papers, to the University Library.

BREVIARIUM NOVI II (1495) FACSIMILE EDITION
This Second Novi Breviary Is a Large Codex of 500 Folios.
. The greater part of it was transcribed by Priest Martinac from the district of Lapac in Grobnic, one of the free medieval Vinodol communes. In his colophons he mentions 1493, 1494 and 1495 as the years in which the codex was written and finished. It was inscribed for the Pauline monastery and the Church of St. Mary on Osap, a little hill outside the walls of Novi Vinodol. The Pauline monks in the glagolitic areas celebrated the Old Slav services from glagolitic liturgical books. The script, particularly that of Priest Martinac is neat and legible liturgical script in square Croatian glagolitic as was use in the 14 and 15 centuries. In language the codex is the Croation redaction of Church Slav. The texts date from the 10th to the 15th centuries, and old and new linguistic elements are intermixed. The breviary retains entire the breviary of the Roman Curia distinguished by lessons of considerable length and detailed descriptions of the offices in the rubrics. 1. Proprium de tempore (fol. 1-267d) 2. Calendar (fol. 268-275) 3. Psalterium (fol. 276a-322c) 4. Officium defunctorum (fol. 322c-324c) 5. Commune Sanctorum (fol. 324c-355c) 6. Officium "de Beata" (fol. 356a-359c) 7. Proprium sanctorum (fol. 382a-500d) All the components of this codex: language, script, illuminations, and text are characterised by a mixture of older forms and newer innovations. They present a wide field of interest to scholars in linguistics, and philology, and to librarians, liturgists, musicologists and historians of art. In order to facilitate reading and orientations a glagolitic alphabet has been provided, a list of the most frequent abbreviations of contents. The codex dates from 1495 The Fine Art Facsimile Edition: Codices Selecti vol. LXI. Graz 1977. 1000 pp. (500 fol.) with reduction of the original size (360 x 260 mm). 8 pp. are reproduced in full colour, the other pages in black-and-white. Book size: 275 x 205 mm. Binding: half leather. The scholarly commentary (in German and English): M. Panteli and A. Nazor, Zagreb. Binding very slightly dented at bottom of spine, o/w very fine copy.

METIVIER, GEORGES,
Rimes Guernesiaises
0. par un Câtelain. Londres: Simpkin Marshall, Guernesey: E.Barbet, n.d. [c. 1840 - 1850]; [vi], 224 pp. with wood-engraved frontispiece and 14 wood-engraved pictorial head-or tail-pieces; binder's buckram, plainly lettered on the spine; the penultimate page is torn in the margins, with loss of two or three words. Georges Métivier [1790 - 1881], known as "The Guernsey Burns", drew heavily on traditiional and oral material for his poems in the Guernsey patois, but he lived much of his life in exile. In the preface to the edition of his "Rimes guernesiaises" which we are offering, the poet rails against an edition that had been published in Guernsey a few years previously under the same title in his absence, and without his editorial imput or supervision: "L'auteur des RIMES GUERNESIAISES n'habitait plus l'ile lorsque parut, il y a quelques années, un recueil sous ce titre, dans lequel se trouvait introduites plusieurs pièces qui lui sont entièrement inconnues, ces morceaux étant composés dans un patois désagréable, et très-différent du dialecte si expressif, nerveux et sonore, de la gogenarde vingtaine des Carités". Judging by the paper of our edition, and by the style of the wood-engraved illustrations, the book we are offering is from about 1840 - 50; it is therefore probable that the edition from which Métivier wished to disassociate himself, and the dialect and content of which he here corrects, is the 1831 edition usually associated with him and usually seen as having met his approval. A 32-page glossary is included in the pagination. The frontispiece, an illustration to the poem "Lamentations de Damaris", shows figures in front of an old house in Rue de la Fontaine, the street where Métivier was born.

O'TOOLE, L.M. [PADDY] AND ANN SHUKMAN (EDS.)
General Semiotics (Russian Poetics in Translation Volume 3)
. Oxford, Holdan Books, 1976,82pp. paperback. Contents: Modelling significance of the concepts "end" and "beginning" in artistic texts / Yu. M. Lotman ; translated by Wendy Rosslyn --Logico-semiotic level of proverbs and sayings: towards a classification of the genre / G. Permyakov ; translated by Doris Bradbury --Stage setting, artistic space and time in the folk theatre / P.G. Bogatyrev ; translated by L.M. O'Toole --On the cosmological origins of early historical descriptions / V.N. Toporov ; translated by Christopher English. In the mid-1970s, with the establishment of the Neo-Formalist Circle in Britain and the publication of a number of international anthologies of and commentaries on the Russian Formalist theorists of the period 1916-1932, it became clear that this important school of literary theory and criticism was only sketchily known to scholars unable to read Russian. The editors, Ann Shukman and Michael O'Toole, published in English ten volumes (80-120pp. each) of the key Formalists: Eikhenbaum, Tynyanov, Shklovsky, Brik, Jakobson, Tomashevsky, Yarkho, Bernstein, Freidenberg, Bogatyrev and Vinogradov on poetry, prose genres, dramatic structure and cinema.Since the Soviet suppression of Formalist theorizing in the early 1930s, it was left to the Bakhtin School of discourse theory and the Prague School of Structuralists to continue the best of their enterprises until the emergence of the Russian Structuralist theorists of the 1960s to 80s, such as Lotman, Zholkovsky, Scheglov, Toporov, Gasparov, Tarlinskaya and Permyakov, who have continued to influence theories of literature, cinema, language and culture worldwide. [note; Holdan books took over Thornton's Bookshop in Oxford in 1983 ).

THELIN, NILS B.,
On the Nature of Time a Biopragmatic Perspective on Language, Thought, and Reality
. ( Acta Universitatis Upsaliennsis - Studia Slavica Upsaliensia volume 48. ) Uppsala, 2014, 480pp. illustrated hardback.
¶ This book is a synthesis of more than three decades of research into the concept of time and its semiotic nature. If traditional philosophy - and philosophy of time should be no exception - in the shadow of advancing biology can be said to have reached an impasse, one important reason for this, in harmony with Wittgenstein's vision, appears to have been its lack of appropriate tools for explicating language. The present theory of time proceeds, accordingly, from the exploration of temporal expressions in language as an evolutionary fact. It derives in a hypothetical, coherent feedback process of hierarchically or dered distinctions the semantics of time from its biologically dictated perceptual and cognitive-pragmatic origins. The corresponding abductive-regulative model is anchored in the assumption of biological rhythmization as the very foundation of perception and mental/physical action. Under- stood to originate in space and spatial perspective, time reveals itself as an instrument for temporal perspective on motion (events and situations) in a process of analysis, i.e. discontinuation of chaos made divisible and continuous by the rhythmical screen. Whereas tradition- al philosophy of time paid attention almost exclusively to the temporal category of tense , the biopragmatic model sees strong evidence in the perspectival nature of time for ascribing the decisive, and probably universal, role in temporal analysis to the linguistic category of aspect . Aspect may, according to the present findings, be assumed to partake already of change- of-state and cause-effect analysis without which man's adaptation to new situations - and precondition for survival - would be inconceivable. The proposed model of space/time cogni-tion, inspired by Hegelian dialectics, Heidegger-Gadamer's hermeneutic circle and Peircean logic, makes Kantian a priori superfluous and liberates time from its enigmatic appearance. For the first time in temporal studies it thus appears possible to derive hypothetically linguistic expressions of time all the way from pre-temporal, homogeneous continuity effected by biological rhythmization, via pre-temporal metonymic (Gestalt), chunk-wise partitioning - as a general precondition for the perception and, based on primary metaphorization, the cognition of things, space and motion - to temporal analysis/discontinuation proper, primarily by aspectual perspective, and the subsequent synthesized, heterogeneous continuity of temporally ordered events. The conception of time, so disastrous for modern temporal logic, i.e. as moving object assigned extension, divisible continuity ( ? linearity') and direction, can be shown to have emerged as a result of secondary metaphorization.
