Large folio, 14 1/4" x 20", with 21 illustrations in colored pencil by Candido Portinari reproduced in the size of the originals. Text in Portuguese. Suffering from lead and arsenic toxicity from paint, Portinari took up colored pencil in 1956 to create new illustrations for Don Quixote. In 1972, when the publishing project came to fruition, poet Carlos Drummond was invited to write 21 poetic glosses to accompany Portinari's drawings. The book is formatted as a folio, with loose sheets within paper covered boards in a printed dust jacket. Contents are fine, with all sheets present. 3 inch split at the lower front hinge, board otherwise strong and intact. Some splitting to the fold of dust jacket in same location, dust jacket has closed tears, old tape repairs, some soiling and is taped to covers. Three business cards of Banco Frances e Brasileiro S.A. officials clipped to free end sheet: Jean-Marie Monteil, Director Gerente Geral; Jean Naville, Diretor Superintendente; Roger Van Nieuwenhove, Inspector Geral Adjunto (card with two signatures). A beautiful production. Internally near fine, overall very good. Near Fine/Very Good.

Internally fine, pages and plates bright white with no foxing - rare to find as such. French-American anthropologist Paul Du Chaillu spent nearly four years on his first expedition to Central Africa covering 8,000 miles. He brought back numerous specimens of exotic birds and confirmed the existence of the gorilla. His account is a seminal work on Equatorial Africa. Very Good/No Jacket.
