Ameghino, F.
Contribucion al conocimiento de los mamiferos fósiles de la República Argentina.
Buenos Aires, Pablo E. Coni é Hijos (Jacobo Peuser, ed.), 1889. In two volumes (text and atlas). 4to and folio (35.2 x 25.4 cm). Text volume: xxxii, 1,027 pp.; Atlas: xi pp,; 98 lithographed plates, with explanatory text leaves. Contemporary uniform quarter calf over blindstamped burgundy boards. Spines with five raised bands and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. A rare, massive work by the famous Argentine palaeontologist and vertebrate zoologist Florentino Ameghino (1853-1911). "From 1887 until his death, Ameghino was passionately devoted to the study of fossil mammals from Patagonia, with the valuable support of his brother Carlos Ameghino (1865-1936) who, between 1887 and 1902, made 14 trips to that region, where he discovered and collected numerous fossil faunas and made important stratigraphic observations" (Wikipedia). The present work summarizes all that was written on South American fossil mammals, including works by De Blainville, Burmeister, Charles Darwin, Alcide d'Orbigny, etc., with many additions - including new species - and corrections by Ameghino. Published in the Actas de la Academia Nacinal de Ciencias en Córdoba, as the complete volume VI. Inscribed in pencil on the title page by J. W. Romero (dated Junio 1890), and on the first blank recto by the Australian palaeontologist and malacologist Jeffrey Darl Stilwell, with acquisition date. Boards of the atlas volume with some abrasion and superficial worming, especially of the rear board corners, internally a few worm holes restricted to the lower margin and lower inner gutter of the endpapers and the first and last two plates; tear in first blank of the atlas volume. Some spotting, mainly to the first and last few leaves and generally quite clean. All all a very good set. Cat. BM(NH) Supplement p. 18; Nissen ZBI, 6527. Not in Wood.

He graduated under the great French entomologist Henri Heim de Balsac (1899-1979) and later became a professor at the university of Yaoundé, Cameroun. Minimal shelf-wear; otherwise a very good copy. Ampferer, O. and W. Hammer
Geologischer Querschnitt durch die Ostalpen vom Allgäu zum Gardasee.
Wien, Geologische Reichsanstalt, 1911. 8vo (25.0 x 18.0 cm). 180 pp.; 50 text figures, three folded maps, including the 345 cm long full-colour profile in rear pocket. Later blue cloth over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spine. The core of this paper is formed by the very large profile of a large section of the Alps; it took the authors five years to complete and brought them to view the Alps as a "Gesamterscheinung, als einen Bewegungssorganismus". Published in the Anstallt's Jahrbuch, and neatly bound for its former owner, the Austrian geologist Alexander Tollmann (1927-2008). His small, pencilled, name is above the drophead title. A very good copy; rare in this state. Several book dealers offer this work at a very low price, but, apparently, these cheap copies lack the humongous profile.

Andersson, G. (ed.)

Stockholm, Generalstaben Litografiska Anstalt, 1910. 4to (26.7 x 20.3 cm). 518 pp., five maps mostly folding and coloured and several text figures. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with five raised, gilt-lined bands and brown morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Original printed stiff wrapper preserved. Deals with the highly important current problem of the change of climate. The work is particularly interesting in view of the recent thoughts about climate change. Light shelf-wear to the boards; former owner's name written in top margin of the front wrapper, otherwise clean and in a very good condition.

Andreae, A.
Ein Beitrag zur Kenntniss des Elsässer Tertiärs. Text, Atlas [Complete].
Strassburg, R. Schultz, 1884. Folio (32.2 x 24.5 cm). Large 8vo (28.0 x 19.2 cm), and Folio (33.3 x 25.0 cm). 332, vii pp.; ten text figures, 12 lithographed plates with explanatory text leaves, however, one being a double-sized map with profiles and with the plate explanation in the plate; and one partly coloured map. Uniform printed wrappers (text) and printed boards (atlas portfolio). A finely illustrated paper, written by the German zoologist, malacologist and palaeontologist Achilles Andreae (1859-1905), depicting fossil freshwater molluscs, but also marine species, as well as mammalian teeth and bones, and some plant remains. Five plates show Foraminifera. Many species are new. This work seems to be connected to the author's thesis, "Beitrag zur Kenntnis des Elsässer Tertiärs. Teil 2:. Die Oligocänschichten im Elsass. Abhandlung zur Erlangung der venia legendi an der Universität Heidelberg" (1884), but the latter publication is said to have only nine plates. This is Abhandlungen zur geologischen Specialkarte von Elsass-Lothringen. Band II, Heft III. Spine cover of the text perished, partly split due to the weak binding, otherwise very good, clean. Rare. Cat. BM(NH), p. 45.

Andreossy, [A.] F.
Histoire du Canal du Midi, connu précédemment sous le nom de Canal de Languedoc.
Paris, F. Dufart, An VIII [1799 or 1800]. 8vo (19.6 x 12.4 cm). Half-title, title page, 415 pp. (numbered [i]-xl, 41-414,[i]); one very large, multi-folded map and five folded charts including one very large, multi-folded). 19th-century polished half calf over marbled boards. Spine with gilt ornamental bands and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. A rarely seen first edition of a monograph describing arguably 17th-century France’s greatest feat of hydraulic engineering, namely the creation of a waterway between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Written by Comte Antoine-François Andréossy (1761-1828), Général de Division et Inspecteur-Général du Corps de l'Attilerie. His function underscores both the commercial and military value of this intercoastal waterway. Andréossy was a Franco-Italian nobleman, who also served as a French diplomat and parliamentarian. He served under Napoleon Bonaparte, to whom this work is dedicated. "He was a great-grandson of the celebrated civil engineer and architect of the Canal du Midi, François Andréossy (1633-1688). The latter was a French engineer, cartographer, and a citizen of Narbonne. After completing his engineering studies in Paris, Andréossy went to Italy in 1660 to study Italian canal technology in Lombardy and Padua. He returned from the trip and sought out Pierre-Paul Riquet as a patron. Riquet was beginning his investigation into the possibility of building a canal across southern France from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Andréossy supplied the technical expertise that Riquet lacked and became Riquet's right-hand man throughout the construction of the canal. He was also responsible for the levelling and the drawing of maps. He monitored the construction and assisted Riquet until Riquet's death. Andréossy continued to work at the canal and serve the family of Riquet until he died in Castelnaudary on 3 June 1688. Andréossy's descendants continued like him for a century. His great-grandson, the general Antoine-François Andréossy, argued in his Histoire du Canal du Midi that his ancestor should be considered the father of the Canal du Midi, instead of Riquet" (Wikipedia). This work includes a fine, large map of southern France, including the canal from the river Garonne to the French Mediterranean coast. Provenance: the name C. A. de Bruijn handwritten in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto. Slight wear to the boards, two tables a bit browned, but the text, map and other tables clean. A simple library stamp of five characters in the top margin of the title page, and a worn label on the spine foot, otherwise a very good, clean copy. We found only one auction record, of a poor copy. In 1804 a second edition was published. Of this first edition, OCLC reports a few copies in European libraries and none outside Europe.
