[Sturm, J. (AND) Frauenholz, J. M.]
Original hand-coloured proof plates for Bilder für Kinder mit Hinsicht auf die von Herrn Andre und Bechstein herausgegebenen Spaziergänge, gesammelt von I. F. Frauenholz.
Nürnberg, Frauenholz, [1792]-1793-1795. Five plates. Oblong (19.5 x 22.5 cm), and near square (22.0 x 19.0 cm). Engraved and finely coloured by hand, one with handwritten captions. On loose sheets; versos blank. Five fine proof plates, engraved and hand-coloured, most probably by the German naturalist, engraver, and publisher Jakob, or Jacob, Sturm (1771-1841). These plates were meant for a very rare work, written by the German agronomist and mineralogist Christian Carl Andre (1763-1831) (see Poggendorf), and the entomologist Johann Matthäus, or Matthias, Bechstein (1757-1822), known as a specialist in noxious forest insects and other agricultural pests, and an acquaintance of Jacob Sturm. The work was edited and published by Johann Friedrich Frauenholz (1758-1822). Only six parts were published, with, in total, 36 text pages, 23 engraved plates in double suite - coloured and uncoloured - and a colour table. The proof plates we have are dealing with insects, viz., Plates 8 (proof plate not numbered), 16, 17, and 21, or botanical (Plate 13). Included are beetles, dragonflies, flies, wasps, butterflies, and caterpillars. Sturm named and exactly dated the insects in the engraved (Proof Plates 16 and 17) or handwritten (Proof Plate 21) captions. The handwriting much resembles that of a letter written by Sturm. Most illustrations were drawn in 1790, one in 1792. It is interesting to note that this publication was issued simultaneously with Friedrich Johann Bertuch's less well-illustrated but far more successful Bilderbuch für Kinder enthaltend eine angenehme Sammlung von Thieren, Pflanzen, Blumen, Früchten, Mineralien, Trachten und allerhand andern unterrichtenden Gegenständen aus dem Reiche der Natur, der Künste und Wissenschaften (published between 1792 and 1830), another publication aimed at children, but actually with text and illustrations equally - if not more - suitable to a broader, and more educated public. The only complete copy of Frauenholz's work that we know of is in the Universitätsbibliothek in Erfurt. The copy in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek München contains only uncoloured plates. A third complete copy may be in Coburg. OCLC reports no copies outside Germany. A few small, colour smudges, as can be expected from proof plates; paper a bit toned and soiled, otherwise very good. Poggendorf I, p. 44. Neither in Cat. BM(NH), nor in Nissen ZBI, nor in any other major bibliography.

Venezia, Andrea Poletti, 1711. Large 4to (26.6 x 20.6 cm). Half title, title page, 76 pp.; four hand-coloured engraved plates on three leaves. Contemporary blind soft boards, spine with later cloth strip. Two papers by Count Marsigli, bound together with a single title, being the first edition of his famous work on the history of the seas, and a treatise on the scale insect causing galls in oak trees from which crimson dye was originally extracted. The first paper deals with red coral, with description and illustration of the living polypes. Marsigli was the first to understand that corals were not plants. The second paper, also finely illustrated, shows the true origin and nature of the crimson dye, giving a detailed description of the coccid genus Kermes (Hemiptera). Both papers are very rare. Small, weak, old stamp on front board and half title, edges slightly frayed, paper repair to lower edge of title page, otherwise a very good and clean copy. Nissen ZBI, 2700.

[Anonymous]
Een oud schipper, van Monickendam.... [Rare Pamphlet on the Eighty Years' War].
No place, no date [1608]. Small 4to (18.0 x 14.6 cm). Engraved title page; five pp. 19th-century marbled wrappers. A very rare pamphlet in which the anonymous author questions a truce between the Netherlands and Spain. "The Twelve Years' Truce was the name given to the cessation of hostilities between the Habsburg rulers of Spain and the Southern Netherlands, and the Dutch Republic, as agreed in Antwerp on 9 April 1609 (coinciding with the Royal Decree of Expulsion of the Moriscos). It was a watershed in the Eighty Years' War, marking the point from which the independence of the United Provinces received formal recognition by outside powers. For Spain, the truce was seen as a humiliating defeat as they were forced to make several sacrifices but they scarcely got anything in return" (Wikipedia). The engraving shows the Dutch and Spanish engaged in some kind of ritual battle on a beach, with shells along the tide line, and dunes in the background. According to Tiele the truce was: "een van de aardigst geschrevene blaauwboekjes tegen den vrede" [one of the most pleasantly written pamphlets against peace]. Paper trimmed to plate edges, some light, mostly marginal staining, small chip to last leaf lower outer corner, otherwise very good. Knuttel, 1466; Muller, 1254b; Tiele, 676.

Paris, Gabriel Valleyre fils, 1733. Small 8vo (16.1 x 9.3 cm). Half-title, title page with engraved vignette; [viii], 377, [iii] pp.; several mathematical figures in the text. Contemporary full speckled calf. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments rich gilt with floral patterns; small red, gilt-bordered morocco label with gilt short title. Marbled endpapers. All edges red. A very rare work by François Cartaud de la Vilate (pre 1700-1737); a Roman Catholic priest who, in this anonymously published work, expressed his criticism of mathematics. The work consists of seven chapters in which he denies the value of mathematics. In the penultimate chapter he tries to discredit the new methods of calculus developed by the great French mathematician Guillaume François Antoine, Marquis de l'Hôpital, and his colleague, Pierre Varignon. Cartaud was also the author of the less controversial Essai historique et philosophique sur le goût (1736). A former owner has added, in an old hand, the author's name on the title page. Boards and spine a bit rubbed. A very good copy. Not in Brunet.

[Wallpaper]
Pochoir wallpaper samples [Chinoiserie].
P. D." [Paul Dumas, Paris, ca. 1930]. A fine set of three very large sheets (119 x 73 cm each) with pochoir designs with flowers and birds, for wallpaper or similar ornamental purposes. A rare collection of very large original pochoir wallpaper artwork in Chinese style, marked "P.D." Échantillons de papier peint. The pochoir process involves the application of gouache or watercolour pigments through the medium of stencils by which many different colours can be applied layer after layer to a single print. The patterns show an interesting variety in colour, based on the same design. This is an (early) work of the French firm of Paul Dumas (operative from 1906 to 1978), renowned for its high-quality wallpaper and wallpaper design. The designs are reminiscent of the work of Paul Poiret, who worked for Dumas. Poiret (1879-1944), “was a leading French fashion designer during the first two decades of the 20th century. His contributions to his field have been likened to Picasso's legacy in 20th-century art” (Wikipedia). In all, this forms an extraordinary ephemeral collection of practical design in pattern and coloration. A few small defects and skilful repairs, yet largely in its original state and in a very good condition especially given the size and age. Yes, this will look absolutely stunning above the couch... The colouring is vivid and bright: it must be seen!

[Darwin, Charles Robert]
Portrait of Darwin - Rare carte de visite.
Down and London, Elliott and Fry, [1874]. Albumen print, mounted on cardboard with rounded edges and a red ink border (10.0 x 6.2 cm). With the name Darwin printed in black below the photo, and red, crowned logo on verso. Preserved in transparent sleeve. Carte de visite. With a fine, crisp portrait of Charles Darwin at an age of ca. 68 years. This photo was probably made in the studio of Elliott & Fry, in 1874. "...while Darwin wrote and published two of his most important evolutionary tracts - Descent of Man and Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals - he took a hiatus from sitting for his photographic image. Once these books were out, however, he needed an updated carte-de-visite that he could send out to his friends and supporters. He turned, again, to the photographers who had made his most recent cartes, Elliot and Fry". They produced at least four different poses, which Darwin would have sent to friends and admirers." (Darwin Project - photographic portraits). Van Wyhe gave the four known poses the letters a to d. This card is of his type b.4. The card bears the printed number 1391, and on its verso a red monogram "P". Very rare in such excellent condition. J. Van Wyhe in: Helvert, P. van & J. Van Wyhe, Darwin: a Companion, 1874 b.4 (p. 175). Not recorded by Freeman.

Included is the rare General-Register zum Praktischen Ratgeber im Obst- und Gartenbau Jahrgang 188-1895, in a very nice, matching original binding. The bindings of the first 19 volumes (and the second last) are very beautiful. The volume for 1911 is bound with those of 1912 and 1913, and is not complete. Slight wear to a few board edges, some light toning; a few plates partly stuck to the adjacent page, the latter, in a few cases, with some loss.
