Victorian full dark blue calf, sometime respined, spine lettered and decorated in gilt in compartments between raised bands, date in gilt at foot of spine, two line gilt border with gilt corner pieces, all edges gilt, endpapers renewed, inscription on blank flyleaf "The Gift of The Countess of Lonsdale to John Peile 10th Novr. 1836". The principal wealth of the Earl of Lonsdale was from the coal trade with Ireland but the 3rd Earl bankrupted the coal mines in Whitehaven which led to the closing of Lowther Castle in 1936. A very good clean sound copy, sides a little scratched, corners of covers rubbed, first section slightly sprung but binding firm from rebacking, a couple of small marks in blank margins but contents clean throughout, no inscriptions or markings in text.

During this time she wrote the work by which her name is best known 'Lessons on Objects' followed by 'Lessons on Shells.' A very good copy, spine slightly rubbed, corner of lettering-piece chipped but binding sound, some foxing to plates but contents generally clean, no inscriptions or markings, still a pretty looking copy.

A reasonably good looking set. The author was assisted by Prof. John Wilson ("Christopher North"), dedication to the Bishop of St. David's from "Peter Morris" with the address Pensharpe Hall, Aberystwyth. Engraved armorial bookplate on endpaper in each volume of Christopher Turnor, Stoke Rochford Hall, Library. John Gibson Lockhart, 1794 - 1854, Scottish writer and editor, best known as the author of the definitive biography of his father-in-law Sir Walter Scott. Peter Morris was a fictional character of Lockhart. This edition printed the same year as the first edition.
