China, no date given c1920s. handmade album with painted silks backed onto boards forming the pages (Chinese scenes, flowers and birds), 9 boards each double sided plus a front and back cover also with painted silks, 17 pages of postcards, each page contains at least 4 postcards plus some loose postcards (over 70 postcards). no date circa. 1847. [2] 1-55 verso with printed designs and pencil referances recto blank, pages 65-100 water and chain marked blank leaves, leaf 101/102 a single monogram verso, pages 103-260 water and chain marked blank leaves, 261-278 printed religious designs [1], pages 57-64, 189-190, and 253-258 are missing, these look to to be under-glaze tissue ceramic transfers - first developed circa 1750 and involved engraved or etched copper plates, from which tissue was printed with cobalt blue oxides which could then be applied to the ceramics. Could have been a factory catalogue? Referances in pencil are made to a jug, spoon and drinks stand, library ticket to spine and front free-end paper with stamps recto, the cover is worm and chipped, rubbed at the extremities, bumped corners but a robust binding, strngthened hinges, burn on the tail edge that affects the front board and the first 15 leaves, interesting content that is clean and tightly bound, this volume is in good condition, bound in ruled calf with gilt titles to the spine, 37.5 x 29cm, Hardback.
