BAATSCH, HENRI-ALEXIS
Hokusai: A Life in Drawing
Thames & Hudson. 2016. (ISBN: 9780500094037). Hardcover. Book, English text, Hardcover in printed cloth with closing ribbon (without dust jacket as issued), 16.8 x 23.2 cm, 0.850 Kg, 224 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with minor signs of wear.; A beautifully illustrated introduction to Katsushika Hokusai, the most prolific artist of Japan's Edo period, and master of ukiyo-e - 'images of the floating world'. Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) was the most prolific and diverse artist of Japan's Edo period, with a body of work reputed to include more than 30,000 drawings, paintings and prints. This book traces the career of this child from a working-class district of old Tokyo, then known as Edo, evoking the special atmosphere of this great city and of Japanese life, when Japan - closed to foreigners - developed in a vacuum a powerfully original culture. Its urban centres enjoyed increasing wealth and stability, leading to a flourishing culture of art and pleasure-seeking. Woodblock prints of the genre known as ukiyo-e - 'images of the floating world' - became defining images of the age. Hokusai became one of the great masters of the woodcut, this 'brush gone wild', as he called himself, being rediscovered by the Impressionists and aesthetes at the end of the nineteenth century. His works range from portraits of popular actors and courtesans to landscapes and seascapes, including his celebrated 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji', and from cleverly observed scenes of everyday life to the erotic prints known as shunga. While his prints had a huge influence on the course of Western art, it is equally true that he himself was influenced by European painting, embracing techniques such as perspective and adapting them to suit Japanese tastes. He remains one of the greatest and --thanks to his personality - one of the most attractive figures of world art. Very Good/No Jacket.

BARKER, RICHARD; SMITH, LAWRENCE
Netsuke: The Miniature Sculpture of Japan
British Museum Publications Limited, London. 1976, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 071411409X). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 20 x 25.7 cm; 0.722 Kg; 184 pages including 36 netsuke in colour and 650 monochrome illustrations.; Used book with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Netsuke open the door to almost every aspect of Japanese life seen in miniature. So intricate and delicate, even humorous at times, is their carving that in the West it is often forgotten that netsuke served a functional purpose as small toggles. They were to stop the cord slipping on the sash, which hung the small objects that every man needed to carry around with him - his tobacco pouch, pipe, purse and yatate (a combined writing-brush and ink-well). Before the seventeenth century netsuke were insignificant objects and rarely of artistic interest. With increasing prosperity, merchants, often rich and enlightened patrons of the arts, were not allowed to flaunt their riches and so fine netsuke were a means by which a merchant could express his wealth in a not too noticeable form. Today fine netsuke are appreciated not only for their workmanship but also for the glimpses of Japanese legend and everyday life that they give in such beguiling ways. They exist in many different kinds of material, often specially and cleverly selected to reflect the object they represent. Richard Baker and Lawrence Smith have selected 404 of the best and most interesting netsuke from the British Museum. Every piece is illustrated, including signatures of carvers where present, and the introductory text fits the pieces in their context and comments on their place in the world of netsuke. Notes on the carvers, their schools and areas of work are an important and useful feature which will be of great value to all the collectors together with the comprehensive illustrated coverage. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

BARRETO, LUÍS FILIPE (ED.)
Tomás Pereira (1646 - 1708): A Jesuit in Kangxi's China
Centro Cientifíco e Cultural de Macau, Portugal. 2009. (ISBN: 9789728586133). Hardcover. Book, English and Portuguese text; Hardcover; 24 x 30.5 cm; 1.155 Kg; 148 pages with colour illustrations.; Limited edition of 750 copies.; As new with signs of shelf wear. Our logo is glued to the front free endpaper.; Exhibition Catalogue.; This catalogue results from a long period of research about the life of the Portuguese Jesuit Tomás Pereira, who was, until recently, very little known by the academic community and almost anonymous in the collective memory. The point of departure for this investigation project was Tomás Pereira's diary, Diário de 1689, which was published for the first time in 1961. From then onwards, the Jesuit priest remained relatively forgotten. From 2006 until 2008, when the results were presented at an international colloquium organised by the Centro Científico e Cultural de Macau, there was a systematic search for new documents relating to his life, with new chronological facts being established. This gave origin to the exhibition and subsequent catalogue, which not only explains the life of Tomás Pereira through three main articles - his life in Portugal, his life in India, and his life in emperor Kangxi's China - but is also accompanied by a catalogue of objects and documents that relate to his character and the places where he had his missions. With 37 catalogue entries, each with the respective image and caption, it is a fundamental book for the understanding of the general context of the life of the Jesuits in Europe, India and China. Very Good/No Jacket.

BARTHOLOMEW, TERESE TSE
Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art
The Asian Art Museum. 2006, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0939117363). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 23.7 x 31.2 cm; 2.279 Kg; 352 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover. Minor signs of wear on the interior.; Can decorative objects increase one's wealth, happiness, or longevity? Traditionally, many Chinese have believed that they could, provided they include the appropriate auspicious symbols. In Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art, Terese Tse Bartholomew, culminating decades of research, has provided a thorough guide to such symbols. Auspicious symbols in Chinese art are often in the form of rebuses, visual puns. Because many words in Chinese share the same pronunciation, there is a wealth of opportunities for such punning, and over the centuries many rebuses have developed established meanings. Hidden Meanings in Chinese Art brings a systematic approach to the cataloguing of such hidden meanings. The book is divided into ten chapters, guided by the three Star Gods, Fu (blessings, happiness), Lu (wealth, rewards) and Shou (longevity). Fu governs chapters one through three, on blessings, marriage, and children. Lu governs chapters four, five, and six, on passing exams, gaining official rank, and obtaining wealth. Shou governs chapter seven, on longevity. Three additional chapters survey motifs for peace, wish-granting, and festivals. Richly illustrated with photos of art objects and with many original illustrations by the author and Mulan Bartholomew, and enhanced with extensive bilingual indexes and other supporting materials, this book is an essential reference for anyone interested in exploring Chinese Art and culture. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Interior in very good condition apart from a previous owner sticker glued to the front free endpaper.; "By presenting in this catalogue all the extra-european artifacts which were included in our collection during the 17th and 18th centuries, we hope to satisfy this demand. The book is so arranged that essential parts can be read with profit by amateurs of art and cultural history. Few other ethnographic museums are in possession of such a large number of specimens whose museum history can with certainty be traced backed to the 17th and 18th centuries. This catalogue is meant to be a tool for the further exploration of our collection. The description we have given of each object is restricted to a bare minimum. We are aware, however, that some of these descriptions may be incorrect. We do this in the hope that our readers will respond by correcting our mistakes and by giving supplementary information." extract by the foreword by Torben Lundbaek, November 1979. LUZZATTO-BILITZ, OSCAR
Antique Jade
Casell Publishers, London. 1987. (ISBN: 0304321559). Soft cover. Book, English text; Paperback; 19 x 13 cm; 0.230 kg; 155 pages with colour illustrations.; Used book with minor signs of wear. The interior is in good condition, except for minor yellowing on the front and free endpaper.; The word 'jade' conjures up an image of strange carvings in a smooth green stone. In fact jade comes in many different colours, but all the various types have a delicate beauty which has always appealed to connoisseur and craftsman alike. In China jade was being carved as far back as Neolithic times, even before the discoveries of metal. To cut and shape such a hard material using only bone or bamboo with an abrasive must have demanded extraordinary patience. No wonder the Chinese regarded it as more precious than gold. The objects made were often symbolic, since jade was thought to have magical properties, and shapes represent deities such as the Earth or the Sun. Owing to the hardness of jade it was frequently used to make knives, daggers and small axes, generally with carved decoration. Later, cups and vases, sometimes of immense size, were laboriously hollowed out, and in contrast, in the 17th century when snuff became fashionable, tiny snuff bottles appeared. Figures of animals and mythical beasts were popular, and there are many finely observed tortoises, horses and birds. The illustrations include examples from all these periods and the expert text, by Oscar Luzzatto-Blitz, gives a fascinating account of the background of jade carving, not only in China but also in Pre-Columbian America and New Zealand. Good/No Jacket.

LUZZATO-BILITZ, OSCAR
Oriental Lacquer
The Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited, Middlesex, England. 1969. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 24 x 19.5 cm; 0.43 Kg; 158 pages with 73 colour illustrations.; Used book with signs of wear on the interior and exterior. Signs of wear on the dust jacket which has tears and scuffs. The interior is in good condition with minor yellowing.; Lacquer is the resin of a tree which grows in China and Japan. The techniques of working the resin is delicate and slow: sometimes as many as 200 or 300 coats may be needed, and infinite patience is required as each layer must dry before the next is applied. The author describes the different techniques and styles that have evolved from antiquity to modern times, ranging from simple lotus flower bowls to deeply carved boxes and ornately painted wardrobes. The incredible precision of the workmanship is clearly shown in the illustrations, and a description of each object is given in the accompanying notes. It is when we linger over the details that we really appreciate the refinement of this exquisite art. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

A Gift of Heritage: Selection from the Xubaizhai Collection of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy (2 Volumes)

Two volumes in slipcase.); 28 x 37 cm x 6.5 cm; 5.4 Kg; Volume I, 412 pages with colours illustrations and a few fold outs, including text by Christina Chu, and Painting and Callygraphy images; Volume II, 122 pages with the catalogue entries, each with a caption in English and Chinese.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the exterior of the slipcase, which is faded on the top and bottom of the front. The hardcover volumes have minor signs of wear. Interior as new. Both volumes include a stamp stating "Complementary" on the rear of the front cover.; "In view of Hong Kong's geographical and cultural affinity to the Guangdong province, more works of art of Guandgond origin are available here for acquisition than those of other provinces. As a result, the Museum has succeeded in building up one of the most representative collections of Guangdong painting and calligraphy, but its collection of works by artists of non-Guandong origin remains relatively weak. This is reflected in the displays in the Chinese Fine Art Gallery where only Guangdong paintings and calligraphy together with 20th - century Chinese paintings are on show, but no works earlier than 20th century by masters of non-Guangdong origin are represented. This phenomenon has changed since the receipt of the Xubaizhai Collection into the Museum. After the opening of the Xubaizhai Gallery of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy on 26 September 1992, visitors to the Museum will be able to view the gems of Chinese painting and calligraphy in the context of Chinese fine art in China as a whole. The Museum's collection of Chinese fine art majoring in works by Guangdong masters was much expanded in scope in 1989 when Mr. Low Chuck Tiew donated his collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy dating from the 5th to the 20th century to the Urban Council. Known as the Xubaizhai Collection of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy, the collection was assembled by the determined efforts of Mr. Low over a period of fifty years. His aim was to build up a comprehensive coverage of Chinese painting particularly of the Ming and Qing periods. While the early periods in the development of Chinese painting and calligraphy were highlighted by pieces of Six Dynasties and Tang dynasty sutra writing and important works of Song and Yuan masters, the collection features a comprehensive coverage of works of major masters of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Masterpieces of the twentieth century by such masters as Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi, Huang Binhong and Xu Beihong are also represented in the Xubaizhai Collection. This generous gift from Mr. Low Chuck Tiew changes the status of the collection of Chinese painting and calligraphy in the Museum of Art. From a provincial collection of Guangdong painting and calligraphy, the collection now has risen to a standard of international distinction." excerpt from the preface by Laurence C.S. BOULAY, ANTHONY DU
Chinese Porcelain
Octupus Books Limited, London. 1973. (ISBN: 0706400453). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 21.2 x 24.7 cm; 0.573 Kg; 95 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations; used book in good condition, with minor signs of wear in the dust jacket. The front cover cloth as some marks, which are only seen if the dust jacket is removed; The text is divided in four main chapters: The early wares; The Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), The Ch'ing dynasty (1644-1912); and Chinese Export Porcelain.; The products of the Imperial and other kilns have created one of the gentlest and most beautiful of the arts. The technical inventiveness of Chinese potters - they had discovered methods of glazing pottery by the third century BC - made possible the manufacture of wonderfully delicate materials and colours. Their versatility as artists enabled them to design new shapes, and decorate them with incised or applied motifs which have been imitated throughout the world. Anthony du Boulay traces the development of Chinese porcelain from its beginning to the early 20th century. His scholarly survey of this wonderful artistic tradition is illustrated with 32 colour plates and 100 black and white illustrations. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

BOULAY, ANTHONY DU
Christie's Pictorial History of Chinese Ceramics
Phaidon, Christie's Limted. 1984, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0714880159). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English Text, 22 x 28.6 cm, 1.404 Kg; 319 pages with over 1000 illustrations, including 200 in colour.; Used with signs of wear on the dust jacket, which is price clipped and has a tear on the back. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Interior in very good condition.; Chinese ceramics are among the most popular works of art in the world. From the discoveries in the tombs of early emperors, it is clear that pottery and porcelain have had a high value in China for several millennia. In this book, Anthony du Boulay explains the history and development of ceramics in China from the Bronze Age to the nineteenth century. The hundreds of pictures are arranged in a historical sequence, each double page covering a definite period, place and style. The illustrations are grouped into chapters, covering periods, each of which is introduced by a brief and lucid text, outlining the historical trends. This reach subject has never before been treated with such a mass of illustration, giving collectors and students alike the opportunity to refer to styles and periods, and to compare and identify. Nearly all the pieces have passed through Christie's salerooms over recent years, and represent a cross-section of Chinese ware available to the collector. The illustrations thus show objects that are on the art market rather than pieces that can only be admired from a distance in museums. The book lists the auction values reached by the pieces illustrated, together with the date of the auction. Through this book the collector will become familiar with the appearance and the history of Chinese ceramics, the range of the illustrations creates an invaluable source of reference for every dealer, collector and student. The book is not only a useful tool; however, it also displays the beauty and variety of the work of Chinese potters throughout history. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

BOYAJIAN, JAMES C.
Portuguese Trade in Asia Under the Habsburgs, 1580 - 1640
The Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore and London. 1993, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0801844053). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text.; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 0.7 kg.; 16 x 23.5 cm.; 356 pages .; Used with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; While Spanish traders of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were mining the riches of the New World, the Portuguese continued to reap the lucrative Asian trade in spices and luxury items. Historians have long considered the Portuguese trade the exclusive enterprise of the kings of Portugal and a few privileged aristocrats, with only minimal participation by private merchants. But in fact, argues James C. Boyajian, actual capital investments by private Portuguese merchants were roughly ten times those of the Portuguese crown - and even exceed those of the far larger Dutch East India Company. In Portuguese Trade in Asia under the Habsburgs, Boyajian reassesses the consequences of Portugal's flourishing private trade with Asia, including increased tensions between the growing urban merchant class and the still-dominant landed aristocracy. He also shows how Portuguese-Asian trade formed part of a global trading network that linked not only Europe and Asia but also - for the first time - Asia, West Africa, Brazil, and Spanish America. And he argues that, contrary to previous scholarly opinion, nearly half of the Portuguese-Asian trade was controlled by New Christians - descendants of Iberian Jews forcibly converted to Christianity in the 1490s. Ironically, Boyajian concludes, the vast wealth that flowed into Portugal between 1580 and 1640 did little to enrich the country. Landed aristocrats who controlled the church, the Inquisition, and the royal administration used their position to deny merchants the social standing that would encourage productive investments in Portugal. And by the seventeenth century, the Portuguese-Asian trade itself was doomed - the result, Boyajian argues, not of the much-heralded Dutch economic successes but of Dutch naval blockades that effectively severed Portugal's trading lifeline with Asia.
