[EPHEMERA] [EUREKA COIN SHOP] [COIN COLLECTING]
Three Pieces of Ephemera : Two Check Lists from the Eureka Coin Shop and a Check List from the Tatham Stamp & Coin Company
San Francisco, CA / Springfield, MA: Eureka Coin Shop, 1953. Ephemera. Three small booklets: two from the Eureka Coin Shop, one from the Tatham Stamp & Coin Company -- all three are check lists of U. S. Coins. All three are in Very Good to Very Good+ condition and were issued without dust jackets. "Coin collecting is the collecting of coins or other forms of minted legal tender. Coins of interest to collectors often include those that circulated for only a brief time, coins with mint errors and especially beautiful or historically significant pieces. Coin collecting can be differentiated from numismatics, in that the latter is the systematic study of currency. Though closely related, the two disciplines are not necessarily the same. A numismatist may or may not be a coin collector, and vice versa." (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

[EPHEMERA], [PHOTOGRAPHS] [ATOMIC BOMB] [HIROSHIMA], Two Photographs of Atomic Bomb Damage in Hiroshima, Japan
[EPHEMERA], [PHOTOGRAPHS] [ATOMIC BOMB] [HIROSHIMA]
Two Photographs of Atomic Bomb Damage in Hiroshima, Japan
Hiroshima, Japan: USGS, 1945. Photograph. Hiroshima: United States Strategic Bomb Survey (circa 1945). 2 black and white gelatin silver print photographs, measuring approx. 4" x 5". There are typed captions on the reverse of each print. One print includes a large ink stamped image of the Hiroshima- Matsuyama Ferry Line. These two photographs are official United States Strategic Bomb Survey damage prints of Hiroshima (USSBS) , captured on November 28, 1945. One print shows the exterior view of the Chugoka Coal Distribution Control Company (building #12 in the survey) , the other photograph has a caption of "Building 300 ft. NWW from GZ, no Structural Damage. Both photographs include latitude and longitude coordinates. "Verbal and written accounts of the destruction of Hiroshima by atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 are well known, but photographic images of it have always been relatively rare. While the U. S. Government attempted to control the circulation of any such images following the end of World War II, the irony is that it was also the source of the largest body of photographs of the aftermath of the event. That work, made in 1945 for the United States Strategic Bombing Survey — initially classified and subsequently lost for more than 40 years...Photographers in the Physical Damage Division of the Survey were tasked with documenting the broad extent and mundane detail of atomic destruction for later analysis by architects and civil engineers. The images they made helped form the basis for civil defense architecture in the U. S, especially in the early part of the Cold War, from the design of bomb and fallout shelters to suburbanization.". (EPHEMERA) [CARTE DE VISITE] [JAPAN] [PHOTOGRAPHS]
Two Carte de Visites from Nagasaki, Japan C1880's-1890's View of the "Temple of the Devils" and the "Bund of Ohuda"
Nagasaki, Japan: No Publisher Listed, 1880. Other. B&W Illustrations; Two Carte de Visites from Nagasaki, Japan c1880-1890's. The first view is of the Bund of Oura - the waterfront where westerners were allowed, with Sampans in the water. The Second view is "Oni no Jere" The Temple of Devils on a hillside. Both cards are in Very Good+ condition, with some beginning tidemarking / foxing to the edges. "A series of encounters between the West and Japan in the 1850s ended Japan's isolationist trade policies. In particular, the treaty with Russia, signed on February 7, 1855 established Nagasaki as an open port and, further, granted extraterritoriality privileges to foreigners living in Japan. These encounters finally culminated in 1859 when the Ansei Treaties, and in particular the Harris Treaty with the United States, took effect. These treaties demanded immediate opening of ports, and also established generally unequal trade relationships between the Western powers and Japan. In 1860 development of the area around Oura Creek began; by August 15, 1862, Japanese officials ordered foreign residents of Nagasaki into this new settlement area.". Very Good+ .

(EPHEMERA) [WORLD WAR I] [WORLD WAR I BALLOONS] [BALLOON PATROLS][BALLONHALLE VON INNEN]
Two Original Postcards from World War I Germany Featuring Balloons
Germany: No Publisher Listed, 0. Other. B&W Illustrations; Two World War I postcards (5.5" x 3.5") in Very Good- condition. Both postcards are not filled in (with the exception of four words inked on one of the postcards). The cards are labeled: Fesselballon vor dem Aufstieg, and, Ballonhalle von Innen. One postcard has a one and a half cent stamp. "World War I was the high point for the military use of observation balloons, which were extensively deployed by both sides. The British, despite their experience in late 1800s Africa, were behind developments and were still using spherical balloons. These were quickly replaced by versions, commonly referred to as kite balloons, which were flyable and could operate in more extreme weather conditions; at first the German Parseval-Siegsfeld type balloon, and then French Caquot type dirigible. By World War I, artillery had developed to the point where it was capable of engaging targets beyond the visual range of a ground-based observer. Positioning artillery observers on balloons, generally a few miles behind the front lines and at altitude, allowed them to see targets at greater range than they could on the ground. This allowed the artillery to take advantage of its increased range." (from Wikipedia). Very Good- .

(EPHEMERA) [WORLD WAR 2] [PACIFIC THEATRE], World War II Army Letter Describing the Battle of the Philippine Sea
(EPHEMERA) [WORLD WAR 2] [PACIFIC THEATRE]
World War II Army Letter Describing the Battle of the Philippine Sea
Philippines: Self Published, 1944. Ephemera. This is a six page letter dated 11-19-44: Philippines (six leaves, handwritten on the rectos only). The pages are noticeably toned and there are several edge nicks and tears. The letter is written on official United States Army letterhead. There are official censor punches to the top left corner of each page. The author was a combatant in the Battle of the Philippine Sea -- more colloquially known as The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot. The author gives a very light hearted, but considerably detailed (especially considering it had to pass the censors) description of his part of the battle, along with an overview of the battle as a whole. Unfortunately the only names on the letter are the owners - a Carl Z, and the first letters of the recipient: Des. "The Battle of the Philippine Sea (June 19–20, 1944) was a major naval battle of World War II that eliminated the Imperial Japanese Navy's ability to conduct large-scale carrier actions. It took place during the United States' amphibious invasion of the Mariana Islands during the Pacific War. The battle was the last of five major "carrier-versus-carrier" engagements between American and Japanese naval forces, and pitted elements of the United States Navy's Fifth Fleet against ships and aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy's Mobile Fleet and nearby island garrisons. This was the largest carrier-to-carrier battle in history, involving 24 aircraft carriers, deploying roughly 1,350 carrier-based aircraft. The aerial part of the battle was nicknamed the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot by American aviators for the severely disproportional loss ratio inflicted upon Japanese aircraft by American pilots and anti-aircraft gunners. During a debriefing after the first two air battles, a pilot from USS Lexington remarked "Why, hell, it was just like an old-time turkey shoot down home!" ". Very Good .

[EPHEMERA], [WORLD WAR I] [AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY], [SCRAPBOOKS], World War I Scrapbook of a United States Aerial Photographer / Observer
[EPHEMERA], [WORLD WAR I] [AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY], [SCRAPBOOKS]
World War I Scrapbook of a United States Aerial Photographer / Observer
France: Self Published, 1918. Flexible covers. B&W Illustrations; World War I Scrapbook (13" x10" approx) with 48 pages from an instructor at the Second Aviation Instruction Center at Tours France, 1918. The scrapbook was the property of, and photographed by James F(Fred) Chappell, who is best known as one of the early photographers at the Lick Observatory, and for whom the Chappell Crater on the Moon is named. The scrapbook includes 48 pages of various sized photographs taken by Chappell, starting with photographs of shipboard activities on the transport from the US to Tours, France, candid photos of France and the French rural folk on their travel from the coast to Tours, and then to the compound of 2nd AIC (Second Aviation Instruction Center) which was founded by the French at the Tours Aerodrome and then given over for the use of the United States as a place for instructors in aerial observation and aerial gunnery to teach students. James F. Chappell became an instructor in Aerial Observation -- and ironically because the airplanes were crashing so often and had so many injuries and fatalities, Chappell and other instructors were forbidden from flying into combat, to keep from having excessive losses in the instructor corps. The latter half of the scrapbook includes many photographs of different styles of airplanes (both whole, and in pieces) , the ambulance crew, fire brigade, the camera guns, and aerial photographs and sundry accoutrement dealing with aerial photography, gunnery or observation. There are several rank advancement tickets, small souvenirs and occasional newspaper clippings associated with the school. Chappell graduated as one of the first classmen of the U. S. Army Aerial Photography class held at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. In all 278 photographs plus other ephemera regarding Chappell's tour of duty, starting from his transport in the US to the fields of Tours, France. This scrapbook holds an amazing amount of visual information regarding the early days of the Army Air Corps which became the United States Air Force in 1947.. Very Good .

ABBOTT, LYMAN, The Life and Literature of the Ancient Hebrews
ABBOTT, LYMAN
The Life and Literature of the Ancient Hebrews
Boston, MA: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1901. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. This book is in Very Good condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some bumping, rubbing and edge wear, along with beginning fraying and nicking. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked previous owner's gift notation on the front endpaper. "Lyman J. Abbott (December 18, 1835 – October 22, 1922) was an American Congregationalist theologian, editor, and author." "From 1881 Abbott was editor-in-chief of The Christian Union, renamed The Outlook in 1893; this periodical reflected his efforts toward social reform, and, in theology, a liberality, humanitarianism and nearly unitarian. The latter characteristics marked his published works also. Abbott's opinions differed from those of Beecher. Abbott was a constant advocate of social reform, and was an advocate of Theodore Roosevelt's progressivism for almost 20 years. He would later adopt a pronouncedly liberal theology. He was also a pronounced Christian Evolutionist. In two of his books, The Evolution of Christianity and The Theology of an Evolutionist, Abbott applied the concept of evolution in a Christian theological perspective. Although he himself objected to being called an advocate of Darwinism, he was an optimistic advocate of evolution who thought that "what Jesus saw, humanity is becoming." ". Very Good .

ABBOTT, JACOB, Rollo at Work Or the Way to Be Industrious
ABBOTT, JACOB
Rollo at Work Or the Way to Be Industrious
New York: T. Y. Crowell & Co, 1855. New Edition; Revised by the author. Hardcover. B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good- condition and is lacking a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have bumping, rubbing, several small edge tears and fraying. There is a light slant to the spine of the book. The text pages are generally clean, though there are spots of foxing and finger dirt. The front endpaper has been removed by a former owner. The front pastedown page has the remnants of a previous owner's ink stamped bookplate (which has been partly removed) . Several text pages have been dog-eared. "The origin of the Rollo Series is in some ways similar to the origin of Dicken's Pickwick Papers. A publisher is looking for text to accompany illustrations. In this instance in 1835, T. H. Carter, a Boston book publisher and agent, had 24 diverse illustrations that he wanted to put into a book format. He approached Abbott who eventually incorporated the pictures into The Little Scholar Learning to Talk. Rollo is not mentioned until the last lines of the book but of course he becomes the main character for the series that followed. Abbott was paid $150 for the book which was published by John Allen and Company. The fourteen Rollo Books starting with Learning to Talk and ending with the 1842 Rollo Philosophy Part IV-The Sky were the earliest multi volume children's series involving stories of a central character. These moralistic little tales were printed by numerous publishing houses into the twentieth century. "(Jacob Abbott website). Very Good- .

The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is crisp and clean. "Shana Abé was born in Texas. She spent much of her childhood living in Colorado, with a brief stint in Mexico as a foreign exchange student, and, at age seventeen, lived in Japan as a model. Throughout her childhood, Abé wrote, completing what she calls "The Silliest Romance Novel Ever" during her free time during modeling shoots. [1] Her writing focused on romance, as those were the types of books that she most enjoyed reading. She later attended college in Los Angeles, graduating with a degree in drama. Her second novel, also a contemporary romance, took third place in a writing contest. She sent the book to several prospective agents, many of which responded with questions similar to "Nice voice — but what line are you writing for?" Unwilling to try to fit her writing into some of the rules that governed contemporary romances, Abé chose to concentrate on historical romances. For her first attempt at a historical romance, the newlywed Abé chose to tell the story of her own romance with her husband, set in medieval times. The manuscript was purchased by Bantam Books and published as A Rose in Winter." (from Wikipedia). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket .
