500 rare silver gelatin Soviet photojournalism, socialist realism and art photos 1952 - 60. (Includes photo by Arkady Shaikhet and other named photographers)
No copyright holder stated, 0. 0 pp. No Binding. A private collection of about 500 photos from the former Soviet Union from 1952 - 1960. (They have not been used by press agencies) 450 are identified as silver gelatin black and white photos and about 50 in color.(The photos have been reduced on AbeBooks from 3000kb to 90kb) They are in the socialist realism - photojournalisms style and taken with an eye for the artistic value of the motivs. They were obviously taken by professional photographers who received the era's best cameras like Nikons and Leicas. Serious resources were spend in developing and printing them. Due to the large format they are very suitable for exhibitions. They are not the typical Soviet propaganda photos, there are no photos idolizing Stalin or Lenin and no military photos. The pervading theme is: 'Soviets at work' The first group is the heavy- and light industries, various types of productions like the food industry, the auto industry, going shopping, various hydroelectric dams, portraits (Included a portfolio with over-sized photos of the Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina who won more Olympic medals in the period 1964 to 2012 than anybody else. She won 18 Olympic gold medals, just one less than Michael Phelps) Soviet cities, international sports and leisure. Also the construction of prefabricated buildings called Khrushchyovka. About half the photos are from the Soviet community farms (Kolkhozes). The machinery they used all year. The winter snowplowing, spring fieldwork to autumnal harvest. The livestock, forestry work, irrigation projects etc. and an infinite number of agricultural machines, the daily life at the kohlhozes. The kohlhozes in the photos includes the Karl Marx, Iskra, Kuibyshev, Rassvet and several other. The series also includes several photos of receivers of the 'Hero of Socialist Labour' medals. Included are about 75 press photos covering sports event etc. This is just to mention some of the themes. About half of the photos are over sized 34.0 + 40.0 cm, some even larger. (Triple folded) Many of the photos are in series up to 40 photos covering a common theme often placed in portfolios attached to heavy stock. The photos were taken all over the former U. S. S. R. They are all in excellent condition but with traces of handling. There are various description attached to most of the photos either on a separate text-ark, on a label on the rear of the photo or tipped in below the photos. In the English, French or Arabic languages. The name of the photographers and copy-right statements are only to be found on the press photos. (Please contact me for further details and delivery time). Near Fine.
