The First Edition has this very early old children's illustrated book for sale Our Darlings which is an old story book containing numerous illustrations by various artists including Louis Wain. This book is not dated but is believed to be from circa 1914 and bears a contemporary inscription to the front endpaper in pencil in a neat hand.____The original publisher's green bevelled boards have a red title and red flower decorations to the front board and spine. There is a circular colour plate to the front board of a young girl at the seaside holding a shell to her ear, which has a larger version of the plate opposite page 184.____The boards are in Very Good condition with the front board and spine being very clean and attractive with only slight fading to the front board in the top right corner, but with the plain back board having some mottling marks, and only very slight corner knocking and edge wear. This is an exceptionally clean and attractive set of boards.____There are 288 numbered pages, all edges tinted in green, that are packed with numerous children's short stories that are decorated with either full page colour plates mounted on green card or black and white illustrations.____As you open the book the reader is met with a wonderful large double-page illustration to the front endpapers in green of two hares carrying food and hiding behind a fence. At the end of the book is another large double-page illustration also in green features the two hares being chased by a cunning old fox. The rear endpapers has the printed signature of children's book artist E. Aris.____Ernest Aris was a highly accomplished children's book artist who also designed postcards, cigarette cards, toys and games.____The front pastedown bears an inscription in pencil in a neat hand and dated Xmas 1914.____The colour frontispiece is tipped-in and mounted on green card (as with all the tipped-in illustrations in this book) featuring a teddy bear looking at a spider with the caption "Will It Bite Me?"____Opposite the frontispiece is the illustrated Title Page which is separated by a tissue guard (discoloured and wear to the bottom edge).____The illustrated Title Page is lettered in red and features a young girl offering a cat a saucer of milk. The publisher is credited as John F Shaw & Co Ltd 3 Pilgrim St London.____The Title Page is followed by a two page Contents Page that has two columns packed with children's stories by various children's story authors of the day.____There are two full page colour tipped-in plates by Louis Wain opposite pages 120 and 168.____The illustrations featuring Ernest Aris artwork include the front and rear endpapers, colour plates opposite pages 24, 88, 128, 224, and 280.____The pages are in overall Very Good condition with marks to some pages, but overall very clean.____This is a wonderful old children's illustrated book that will appeal to collectors of Ernest Aris, old Louis Wain book collectors, or to someone wishing to add a rare old children's story book to their book collection. The original dust jacket has a wonderful illustration of a hare running in the woods with a large compass in the background. The dust jacket is in Very Good condition with light creases and marks and a very small hole in the fold of the front flap and so is barely noticeable when the dust jacket is on the book. The original publisher's cream and beige boards bear the printed signature of Richard Adams in gilt to the front board and the title Watership Down in gilt to the spine. The boards are in Near Fine condition with very light creasing to the spine where the book has been opened and read, and very slight knocks to the top and bottom of the spine. This is a very attractive set of boards for the first edition of Watership Down. There are 429 numbered pages complete with reddish-brown plain endpapers to the front and back of the book, the Half Title Page, the Title Page, the Copyright Page, the Dedication Page, Note from J.R.R. Tolkien, Acknowledgements Page, the Contents Page, and the map that goes across two pages. The pages are in Near Fine condition with only very light foxing confined mainly to the edges of the pages that are barely noticeable and only mentioned for completeness. This is a very attractive and collectable example of Richard Adams Watership Down first edition book, the first book to be written by Richard Adams, that will make a wonderful addition to any Richard Adams book collection or any collection of children's classic story books; or even as a special book present that will make the ideal Christmas present, birthday present or anniversary present for him or her. Published by Hodder and Stoughton, The Last Hero has its original blue boards with black lettering to the front and spine, and with Leslie Charteris' initials to the bottom right corner of the front board.____The front board has a couple of rub marks, the back board is very clean and the spine has discoloured. The boards have corner knocks, and gentle knocks to the top and bottom of the spine.
