WE WILL NOT CEASE
London, Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1939. 1st Edition. 0 pp. Hardcover. 286pp crown 8vo original blue cloth. Mild foxing to first and last few leaves and heavier spotting on the edges of the text block. Very sound and in a very good dust jacket. The publishers' file copy, so stamped on upper panel of jacket and front endpaper and 'Archive Copy' on title-page. ***The author's experiences as a conscientious object in the First World War. The first edition is very seldom seen. The book was rejected by Michael Joseph before being accepted by Victor Gollancz, who, to quote the Memoir by Baxter's wife Millicent: " intended making it one of his Left Book Club books. His lawyer made Archie alter all the names in the manuscript except those of the fourteen prisoners . The names were all changed, and Archie signed the contract. Then, as war approached, Gollancz wished he hadn't signed the contract. He was a Jew, and pro-war because of what was happening in Germany to the Jews. He did publish the book, but I believe he wanted to squash it as he sent review copies only to Reynolds News and to the New Statesman and Nation. I don't blame Gollancz. It was just unfortunate for the book. In March 1939 the editor of the New Statesman, Kingsley Martin, wrote a full-page review, headlined 'Crucifixion' . Most of the books in the Gollancz London book warehouse were destroyed in the Blitz.". Very Good/Very Good.
