The Ise Grand Shrine is the most sacred shrine in Japan and during the Edo period Ise was a popular destination for pilgrimages.

[JAPANESE FEATHERS FROM EDO-PERIOD].

[Hand-painted manuscript scroll of different types of feather (or fletching) used in the traditional Japanese arrow making]. About mid or late 18th century.

. A very long scroll (478 x 22.2 cm) with 74 illustrations of feathers, hand-painted in black, grey and white ink on thin paper. The feathers are illustrated with stripes and dots in lots of different variations. An illustration of a falcon appears at the beginning of the scroll. Some small wormholes throughout, not affecting the illustrations. One small hole at beginning and one line of text (probably a name) has been cut out at the start of the scroll, and paper has been restored. Later re-binding with some wear, housed in a modern box. Japanese arrows (Ya) are considerably longer than Western arrows. Traditionally, the shafts were made of a special kind of bamboo and fletched with feathers of larger birds of prey, like hawks or sea eagles. The feathers or fletchings (hane) are one of the most important components of an arrow, giving it stability in flight. There are two main classifications of Japanese arrows; haya and otoya. The first kind was made from feathers from the left wing and would rotate clockwise and the other type was made from the right wing and would spiral counter-clockwise. An unsophisticated but charming piece of artwork.

Originally published in Vienna 1683.A scarce news pamphlet which tells the story of Kulczycki (1640-94), a Polish Lithuanian nobleman who was considered a hero for his actions during the Battle of Vienna in 1683. He volunteered as courier of Prince Starhemberg, the commanadant of Vienna, to make contact with the forces of Duke Charles of Lorraine. Disguised as a Turkish soldier Kulczycki left Vienna and managed to cross the enemy lines to meet the Duke, and then return to Vienna with a promise of imminent relief. Because of his message the defenders held out until the allied armies relieved the city on September 12 1683. The text follows with information about Kulczycki's dealings with coffee. According to a legend Kulczycki, as a reward, was allowed to keep large quantities of coffee beans left behind by the beaten Turks as personal booty. He was the founder of the first coffee house in Vienna called "Hof zur Blauen Flasche". Delisle de Sale (1741-1816) was a controversial French philosopher renowned for his "De la philosophie de la nature". Interesting work on the Assyrian empire with attractive engravings of Babylon and the Kaaba in Mecca. The two large tables are titled: "Chronologie des souverains de Ninive, de Babylone et d'Ecbatane" and " Tableau des variations entre les anciens historiens ... de l'Assyrie, depuis Ninus jusqu'à la Mort d'Astiage". But according to "Chambre syndicate de la librairie et imprimerie de Paris" the author is Philippe Le Febvre (in the printer's declaration). A second edition was published in 1761, a reprint of the text but with a slightly different title illustrated with the prophet surrounded by naked women. His vivid account was translated into French by Joachim Le Grand and published in 1701 (Paris). A Portuguese edition was first published in 1836. This English version by George Lee has been enlarged with an appendix. Ribeiro's history comprises a general account of Ceylon followed by a part devoted to the war between the Portugese, the natives and the Dutch.
