Archibald & Peck's Map of the West Coast from the Ordnance Survey Showing the Royal Route Connections of Mr. David Macbratyne's Steamers Columba, Iona, Etc Printed on Cloth and Coloured Price One Shilling
Archibald & Peck, 1881. Hardcover. Card covers with a title label enclose a colour printed map (13 1/2 x 16 ) on linen of Scotland's West Coast from the Clyde to Ayr in the south, almost to Oban in the north-west and includes Campbeltown and Arran. The map is clean though some childrens pencil scribbles on the rear of the map have been almost erased. A plate on the front pastedown describes the Royal Mail Steamer Columba referring especialy to : the most useful novelty is the Post-Office, where letters, telegrams &c, are received, stamped, sorted, and distributed at every calling place along the route, for transmission to all parts. The scheme has been so successful that the official post Office Report for the month of August, 1880, states that over 73,500 letters passed through the office during one month of which 13,200 were local letters passing between different coast towns on the route of the steamer. Opposite are further details of MacBrayne's services. This is probably a first issue as MacBrayne took over the service from hs uncle David Hutchison in 1880/81. The title label on the front boad is darkened with a little loss at one corner and some light transverse creasing of the boards. A rare piece of MacBrayne ephemera. See scans . Good +
