The voices of the past whisper if you listen . " Paints an evocative picture of contemporary London , filled with colorful & believable characters " . D'Ancona's debut novel is a smart, riveting thriller, which opens with a bang when political consultant Mia Taylor, who slipped away from a family celebration to meet her boss and lover, returns to find her whole charming, upper-crust family killed in a bomb blast. An Irish terror group claims responsibility, and Mia, stunned by her loss, puts her money in trust, quits her job, abandons her lover (wily politician Miles Anderton) and takes a job at an alternative health center in London's down-and-out East End. Mia adapts to her surroundings with surprising ease, but she also begins making inquiries into the bombing. The first lead dead-ends with a dead mobster, but after the center is bombed as well, Taylor steps up her search and hits the mother lode when she learns the full implications of her brother Ben's side business as a high-tech money launderer. A reunion with Anderton reveals his duplicity and leads to one of his political rivals, and D'Ancona follows up with a gratifying ending in which Mia gets her revenge. ABELLA , IRVING
A Coat of Many Colours - Two Centuries of Jewish Life in Canada
Toronto: Key Porter Pub, 1999. First. Soft Cover. Photos. 9 x 9-3/4 x 3/4 " 1552631087 1999 large illustrated paperback book. BRAND NEW from 1999 publisher; Never opened, Never read, Never marked. Book size: 9" x 9-3/4" x 3/4" thick. 248 pages, illustrated with black & white photographs & historical photos & documents. In 1738, a young Jewish adventurer named Esther Brandeau arrived in New France disguised as a man. Her gender and faith were eventually discovered, and when she refused to convert to Catholicism, Esther Brandeau was forced to return to France . But her courage, tenacity and conviction set the stage for the beginning of Jewish life in Canada . From Halifax to Victoria, the scope of Canadian Jewish history is rich and diverse . Jewish fur traders preceeded the arrival of the English in Upper Canada; Victoria was the fist city in British North America to have a Jewish mayor; Jewish women's groups were among the first in Canada to create charitable societies; and workers across the country today are benefiting from the efforts of the Jewish labour force in the early 1900s . In the 1930s and 1940s, however anti-semitic factions gained strength throughout the country, and as recently as the 1950s Jews were barred from certain professions, hotels and clubs . Yet the society that emerged from those dark years is a varied and creative mix, a veritable "coat of many colours" of people, traditions and occupations . illustrated with over 300 photographs and with a text by one of Canada's leading authorities on Canadian Jewish history, this magnificent book presents a surprising and little-known history of a people . This revised & updated book also contains an inspring new introduction, in which Irving Abella reflects on the challenges facing Jewish Canadians as they enter the new millennium . " A Coat of Many Colours : Two Centuries of Jewish Life in Canada " published by Key Porter Publishing, Toronto , in English only . 1999 paperback book *** Secure packing, Safe Shipping since 1965 ***

Adams went to school at Bradfield College , where he won fame as a spell-binding storyteller - not surprisingly ! , and Oxford in the 1930s. Inspector DV of the RCMP - the Royal Canadian Mounted Police -said, at the height of the cold war: "In 25 years the R.C.M.P. has caught only one illegal - real - spy. Not a hell of a lot to brag about is it?" Was this poor record of 'spy-catching' connected with the mysterious " S " , the former director of RCMP Security Services? Is it possible that S himself was a double or even a triple agent? Why was he quietly let go with his pension after a top-level investigation by the Canadian government? Could S have been the mysterious "Fourth Man" in the Burgess - MacLean - Philby matter? In pursuit of the truth, author Ian Adams follows the trail of the brilliant mystery person known as " S " . from Chile where an RCMP officer has accidentally disclosed information, to Australia, then to Canada. It is during this investigation that Adams becomes more and more obsessed with S, as a portrait of the man is given by his exotic mistress as well as by his fellow workers, and by government officials. What also emerges is the intriguing, disturbing inner secret workings of RCMP intelligence. Ian Adams was born to Belgian Congo missionary parents in Tanzania Africa in what became known as Zaire. Ian Adams emigrated to Canada all alone as a teenager, after being raised in Africa, Great Britain and Pakistan. In the 1960s he wrote for daily newspapers in Toronto, Winnipeg & Montreal, and became a war reporter for Maclean's Magazine, travelling extensively in Vietnam during the height of the war, as well as in Latin America and in the Middle East. In 1977 his first novel S Portrait of a Spy became a huge best seller, so controversial that Adams was sued for libel by the former head of the Russian Desk of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Security Service; he became the only novelist in the free world ever ordered to court to reveal his sources for a novel. His defence became such a cause celebre amongst writers and artists across Canada and the United States, that the case was eventually setteled out of court. He has written several thrilling novels, plus movie screenplays & numerous scripts for television . Thick book, 439 pages with index , illustrated with 74 illustrations, including some B&W glossy photos + 10 matte B&W line maps, including double-page on endpages; flat maps, not foldouts. Fascinating 19th century history of British Columbia , in the Canadian west, in the years 1847 to 1871; the time between the drawing of the international boundary and B.C.'s entry into Confederation. In those years, some of the most exciting episodes on the 'new frontier' occured , including the almost war over the San Juan Islands ; the arrival of the bride ship Tynemouth ; the rivalry between the twin colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia ; the building of the Collins Overland Telegraph ; the preparation for attacks on the colonists by Irish Fenians ; the administration of English law by Judge Begbie ; "The Overlanders of '62" cross from Canada ; the arrival of Viscount Milton and Dr. Cheadler ; the planning of the roads to the Interior by Governor Douglas ; Colonal Moody and his Royal Engineers arrival from Britain, and the Royal Marines from China ; missionaries doing their work ; the athoritarian Christian Indian village built by William Duncan at Metlakatla ; the discovery of coal in Nanaimo , and gold in the Queen Charlotte Islands , along the Fraser River and the Thompson River, and, in incredible quantities, the gold rush in the Cariboo ; the first 'independent' settler, eccentric Captain Grant ; the Christmas Indian race held at Takla lake; and much more. Photos include Gold Rush pioneers and towns , Cache Creek , Quesnelmouth , and more; camps , cabins, claims; some Indian portraits, including a Babine chief ; some of the boundary workers in the early days, and more. Author G.P.V. Akrigg was born in 1913 in Calgary, where his father was serving with the Royal North West Mounted Police. He became a professor at UBC , and wrote two previous books to this which were both published by Harvard University Press and his book on Shakespeare was selected by the New York Times as one of its ten best books of that year. His wife Helen was born in Prince Rupert; her father E.C. Manning was District Forester , and later had Manning Park named in his honor. She wrote her M.A. thesis on the Shuswap Lake district, where they lived, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1970. This book was a labor of love for them, and affords hours of enjoyment for the armchair traveller who dreams of the days of the frontier and gold rushes in Victorian times, when men were men and women were scarce and a fresh egg and a clean bed were literally worth their weight in gold. British Buses Before 1945
London: Ian Allan Pub, 1995. 1995 Printing. Hard Cover in Dust Jacket. Photos. 7 x 9 -1/2 " 0711022798 1995 Hardcover Book in DJ , imported from London ... Very Good book in Very Good dustjacket ... DJ now protected in New non-stick clear mylar sleeve ... There is yellow highlighting on several paragraphs, otherwise no noticable flaws ... Book is nice & clean and tight ... illustrated with B&W Photographs ... Between 1900 and World War 2 , the bus in the United Kingdom - initially petrol and later diesel-engined - evolved dramatically to a point where both urban and rural operators came to rely on the pneumatically-tyred bus in preference to the tram and to the trolley-bus ... The early years of the 20th century had seen small motorbuses - often with very limited capacity - developed ... Many of these were based upon chassis produced for commercial vehicles and the economice compared unfavourably with the much more substantial elecric trams ... Almost half a century later the bus had become recognizable as a vehicle of mass public transport ... In Britsh Buses Before 1945 noted transport historian and writer John Aldridge explores the development of the bus through the many manufacturers - some well known, others almost forgotten - that attempted to produce buses ... Whilst many of the manufacturers were British, it is interesting to note how far the Europeans and the Americans penetrated the market - a fascinating foretaste of what was to happen in the 1970s and 1980s ... By the end of the period covered, the British bus market was dominated by a few leading players - such as AEC, Leyland and Daimler - whilst others - like Crossley - maintained an interest ... But many others had come and gone ... Fully illustrated, with a superb selection of photographs, this is a remarkable account of the development of the bus in Britain ... " Britsih Buses Before 1945 " ... By John Aldridge ... 1995 Hardcover book, published by Ian Allan, London ... ***. Very Good/Very Good .

Death and Disaster - the Rise of the Warhol Empire and the Race for Andy
New York: Random House Villard, 1994. Second Printing. Hard Cover in Dust Jacket. Photos. 6-1/4 x 9-1/2 x 1 " 0679432736 1994 Hardcover book in original dust Jacket, second printing . BRAND NEW from 1994 publisher . Never opened, Never read, Never marked. Please note, very small scrumple one corner these, not visible inside jacket. Handsome book; black quarter cloth over black boards, with Gold gilt title impressed on spine, in color artwork jacket. Size: 6-1/4" wide x 9-1/2" tall x 1" thick; 258 pages; illustrated with 18 pages black & white glossy photographs of Warhol, some of his artwork, and the inside of his townhouse, and some people from his life, including Tom Wolfe, as well as photos of the trial to determine the value of the estate after his untimely death. You can't take it with you . Trouble is, Andy Warhol wasn't planning on going, at least not then . The sudden shocking death ofthe late great American artist Andy Warhol took the art world by surprise, and must have been quite a shock to him as well. Even though he always had a deep distrust of hospitals , he didn't expect to be actually killed outright in one. " Dead means a lot of money, honey " , Warhol once said . And he was right . After his death , the story of shameless greed, dastardly deeds, brilliant investments, tainted alliances, stolen treasures, power plays, and the many different types of love, as well as lust for money, which played out , would have topped even the ironic wit of Andy himself . Almost the moment of his death in 1987, less than 24 hours after being admitted for a routine and minor operation . an executor took charge, lawyers were called in , Andy's townhouse, stuffed to the rafters with antiques, collectables, paintings, bric-a-brac and just plain junk, was sealed . Security guards were posted at the Factory . but . not before Warhol paintings were moved to secret warehouses . some of those paintings never to be seen again . The private world that Andy had so carefully constructed and kept hidden for more than 30 years was about to go public in a big way . A brilliant collector, compulsive shopper, and compulsive painter, Andy left vast holdings of antique furniture and jewellry, as well as some museum quality artifacts, and contemporary art by many other artists; as well as a profitable magazine, his New York properties, and , most valuable of all . his own unsold work . in numbers so large, it would take months to even appraise it . In their early moments of shock, his associates set the value of his estate at only between 10 and 15 million dollars. Seven years later, with the estate still not closed, some claimed it was worth $220 million . some said as much as 4 times that . Who was right , and who was wrong, and who was crooked, and who was just plain dumb ? . It took a court case to sort it all out . and when the dust settled, the judge in New York, in 1994, had to assess the value . Shortly after his death in the late 80s, as directed in his will, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was created - it was a non-profit organization to give out grants . By 1990, however the foundation and the estate that created it would be at war . along with the laywer who at one time represented both entities . The battle raged in court, and in the newspapers and magazines and on the television news . When the case was finally ended, the estate value was set in the court at more than 500 million dollars . As Andy might have said . " great " ( no exclamation mark ) . But the process it took to get there was anything but great - it was both comic and tragic, and ultimately absurd . This is the true story of what went on with the Warhol estate . what there was, who got what and what went where . Absolutely fascinating . Author Paul Alexander has written for the New York Times Magazine, ARTnews, The Village Voice , and others, and is the author of Rough Magic, the biography of Sylvia Plath, as well as Boulevard of Broken Dreams, the biography of James Dean . He lives in Manhattan . pub. by Random House Villard, 1994. *** Secure packing since 1965 ***
