 A. H. S., Customs of the Service (Advice to Those Newly Commissioned) Sixth And War Edition
A. H. S.
Customs of the Service (Advice to Those Newly Commissioned) Sixth And War Edition
Gale & Polden, Aldershot, Hampshire, 1941. 6th Edition , Hardcover. Fine Condition/No Dust Jacket. green end-papers; written primarily for the Royal Air Force but equally applicable to the Army; Every officer is expected to obey certain unwritten laws. There are no regulations or written instructions to assist the newly commissioned officer in most of these matters. If he seeks guidance from those in authority over him, he usually receives the unsatisfactory reply that this is " done" or " not done" because it is the " Custom of the Service." He is liable to make many unfortunate mistakes before he learns from experience the numerous unwritten customs he is expected to comply with. This small book is intended to assist those officers who have been commissioned from the ranks or direct from civil life, few of whom will have had any experience of, or opportunity of studying, " Service etiquette" or " Customs of the Service." Size: 12mo - over 6" - 7" tall. 58 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Previous owner's signature in pencil to pre-title page. Gilt titles front. Includes contents index at front. Self-Sufficient Small Holding
Soil Association, Stowmarket, Suffolk, 1977. Second Edition, Card Covers. Very Good/N/A. 9780905200101 illustrated by line-drawings, "this pamphlet is written to give practical help to those seeking a simple, self-sufficient life. It contains one man's experience on one particular organic smallholding where a certain measure of sufficiency is achieved. A family could survive on its own in complete isolation, but this would be a rather uncomfortable and insecure subsistence. Three or four neighbouring smallholders, working in harmony and pooling their individual skills, could live far better. Add a bit of modern technology and life becomes easier, with more leisuretime, less drudgery. The big question is "how self-sufficient does one aim to become?" Today one can choose one's level, seek the best of both worlds ... only a fool would deliberately make hardships for himself ... but this option clouds the issue, making it difficult to define one's ultimate, long-term aim. Tomorrow, however, we may well be thrown right back onto our own resources, in which case the question will answer itself. It would seem sensible to be prepared."; spine a little grubby; 18 pages.THIS BOOKLET IS POST-FREE - any postal charges indicated will be reduced to nil. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Ancestral Manners.
The Builder Ltd. London, 1961. First Edition, Paperback. Very Good/N/A. illustrated by numerous b/w. drawings & cartoons; "the great country houses of England are unique. Set in huge and magnificent parklands, designed by outstanding craftsmen and filled with exquisite furniture and pictures they form a collection that for fascination and sheer delight is unrivalled in either hemisphere. Two world wars have drained England and now the once-great families, no longer able to maintain their enormous houses and estates, must find some means of doing so. By inviting the public to see their houses they have opened a new and enchanting world, and many owners have gone to great pains to make these visits more exciting and pleasurable. 9781857020670 ADAIR, GILBERT, The Postmodernist Always Rings Twice
ADAIR, GILBERT
The Postmodernist Always Rings Twice
Fourth Estate, London, 1992. First Edition, Brown Cloth. Very Good/Good. 9781857020670 black titles spine; "Culture - there can be few words whose meaning has undergone such radical revision in recent years. Once a term suggestive of exclusion and elitism, British culture has descended from the Leavisian and Reithian heights that it formerly occupied. Culture now encompasses all the various codes and practices by which our society constructs its own self-image. Tee-shirt motifs and BT commercials, the Gulf war as seen by CNN and the Gulf war as seen by Jean Baudrillard, Martin Amis's Time's Arrow and J.R. Hartley's Fly-Fishing, Pee- Wee Herman and pop groups' names, Benetton and Brecht - all of these, whether proper 'art' or not, are certainly what we think of, in the postmodern world of the nineties, as culture. In this brilliantly entertaining collection of articles, the novelist and critic Gilbert Adair forges a path through the labyrinth of what he calls the culture industry, and in a lengthy, previously unpublished essay proposes a startling and paradoxical redefinition of how it currently functions."; the price-intact D/J. has a crumpled top edge to the front & a small stain to the rear near the spine which has also lightly marked the rear cover on its outside; the book however is sound & the contents clean & unmarked; including index -215 pages. 9780283993930 ADAMS, RICHARD, Legend of Te Tuna
ADAMS, RICHARD
Legend of Te Tuna
Sidgwick & Jackson, London, 1986. First Edition, Black Boards, Illustrated by: Rico, Ul De. Fine/Fine. 9780283993930 gilt titles spine; illustrated in colour & b/w.; "Three tremendous figures from the legendary world of the ancient Polynesian gods and heroes: Hina, beautiful goddess of the sky, the Polynesian Aphrodite, self-willed and shameless in the pursuit of her desires; Maui, the trickster-hero, half-human, half-divine, who, long ago, with his magic fish-hook, drew up the Pacific Islands out of the ocean and then, Prometheus-like, caught the sun in a snare and tied it fast to circle the earth for ever as the source of life; and Te Tuna, the terrible giant eel of the ocean depths, the most feared creature in the world. Te Tuna, ruling the ocean from his submarine coral palace, was the lover of Hina - for as long as he could keep her love from straying. When he learned that Maui had supplanted him, his wrath was more terrible than storm and earthquake. 'The legend fascinated me,' says bestselling author Richard Adams, 'from the moment I first heard it, some years ago, in Tahiti. I felt I had to try to write it for people this side of the world.' In this narrative poem he has retold unforgettably the greatest of South Sea legends, the tale of the duel to the death between Maui and Te Tuna, and of the harvest of that death, Te Tuna's divine gift from the grave. UI de Rico's superb illustrations, many in colour, form the perfect setting for Richard Adams' poem."; a mint condition copy; 71 pages. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Illustrator: Rico, Ul De. ADDISON, WILLIAM, Audley End
ADDISON, WILLIAM
Audley End
J.M. Dent and Sons Ltd. London, 1953. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. Foreword by Lord Braybrooke. Endpapers show family trees of the house's owners. The importance of preserving such historic mansions as Audley End in Essex (acquired by the nation in 1948) has long been recognized, but to preserve the fabric is not enough. Such houses were built to be lived in and inevitably lose much when they cease to be homes. It is therefore vital that when, as at Audley End, the mansion has passed to the nation for safe keeping something should be done to preserve the knowledge and memory of the life that was lived in it. Mr William Addison has written this fuIl-length history of the house and its families while many who know Audley End and its traditions intimately are still alive, and he has had the full co-operation of the last private owner, the ninth Lord Braybrooke. It has been his particular concern to present the successive owners, many of whom have been national figures, in the everyday circumstances of their lives and not as remote grandees. The result is an extremely interesting and entertaining book, giving a detailed account of the family, the administration and the fabric of the mansion, which when built by Lord Treasurer Howard between 1603 and 1616 was designed to be the largest private house in the kingdom. For .thirty-two years it was a royal palace, and we have a vivid account of Queen Catherine of Braganza and her ladies at a country fair. In the middle of the eighteenth century it was Iargely rebuilt by the fourth Lord Howard de Walden and became one of the great Whig mansions of the day, with grounds laid out by Capability Brown arid indoor furnishings by Robert Adam. The importance of the house in Essex history and its unique relationship with the University of Cambridge are described, but the interest of the book is not confined to any locality. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 237 pages. light wear to edges but now in archive acetate film protection. Dust Jacket price-clipped. Top edge red. ALEXANDER & PULLINGER, JOHN & JOYCE, Roman Cambridge: Excavations on Castle Hill 1956-1988 (Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society Volume LXXXVIII)
ALEXANDER & PULLINGER, JOHN & JOYCE
Roman Cambridge: Excavations on Castle Hill 1956-1988 (Proceedings of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society Volume LXXXVIII)
Cambridge Antiquarian Society, Cambridge, 2000. First Edition, Softcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Many of the excavations took place in the small areas which became available when individual houses were levelled, so that the information recovered was minimal, but the three larger areas, the market-gardens owned by St John's College, the farm owned by the Charity of Edmund Storey and the area around Shire Hall proved particularly important and have allowed an outline history of the town nucleus from the last centuries BC until the 5th century AD to be compiled. An unexpected complication of the fieldwork proved to be that the keeping of the hillside free from buildings for centuries allowed the quarrying of the valuable gravel and chalk marl of which it is composed and the digging of many pits. Only careful trowelling allowed the areas of early land surfaces and the wooden structures on them to be recognised. It will be noted from the plan of excavations (Fig 1.1) that work was largely limited to the upper hillsides and the summit, so that only a partial recognition of the early settlement has been obtained. The lower slopes and the area near the bridge have not been available for study and it may well be that these were more densely inhabited. Size: 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 268 pages. small mark to front cover;. "St. John's" written in ink on front cover;. Allard 14/9/89". In essence, his was a Victorian childhood. ALLEN H. C.
A Concise History of the U.S.A.
Ernest Benn Limited, London, 1970. Second Paperback Edition, Paperback. Good/N/A. 9780510260521 black titles spine; illustrated by three fold-out b/w. maps; "this book discusses the history and politics of the United States almost entirely in historical rather than half in historical and half in analytical terms. The author has done this because he believes that most Europeans, and especially most Britons, tend to see the American system of government (largely owing to the existence of the written constitution of the United States and to the relative shortness of American history), in a two-dimensional - even somewhat shallow - way, with no proper perception of its depth. Yet the American achievement can only be fully understood in terms of the growth and development of the United States over three and a half centuries. Partly also the volume is different because the United States is a larger and more powerful country than any previously included in the series, which makes the task of describing its history and institutions within such a compass as this a truly formidable one. It was said many years ago that it had ceased to be possible for a single historian to write the history of the United States from primary sources. It is very nearly as impossible nowadays for one author to tell the story of the United States from the vast numbers of secondary works which pour from the presses in ever-increasing numbers."; previous owner's name on front endpaper; some light wear & bumping to extremities but a sound & well-bound copy; including appendices & index - 413 pahges. ALLWOOD, MONTAGU C., The Perpetual Flowering Carnation
ALLWOOD, MONTAGU C.
The Perpetual Flowering Carnation
The Cable Printing and Publishing Company Ltd. London, 1912. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. advert. facing title page & 4 pages of adverts. to rear; blind-stamped triple outer border to front cover; poem: 'Reflections of a Carnation Grower' printed to reverse of title page; preface by the author with facing portrait photo.; From the authors preface: I do not say that there is untold wealth in Carnation growing, but to a lover of Nature, that peace and quietness which work with Nature always brings, is sufficient compensation. A famous old horticulturist once said, "A good gardener should not attempt to be a literary man." Now I do not claim to have even attempted to be the latter, for the former is my great ambition; yet while horticulture has so much literature connected with it, one feels that the greater portion of it is too scientific to be of any practical use to the average gardener. Some may think this effort, however, sadly errs to the contrary. Be that as it may, I hope this book, divested of superfluous verbiage, and shorn of perplexing technicalities-which tend to confuse rather than assist the cultural directions-can be easily and successfully followed. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 210 pages. a few small marks to covers. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Slight foxing front/rear pages, but body of book mostly clean and unfoxed. AMAMOO, JOSEPH G.
Chocolate Lady
Jafint Co. London, 1993. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). As New/As New. 9780952236504 Signed by Author. Inscribed on the title page: "To Hugh, with much appreciation, Joseph Amamoo London, Aug. 24, 1994". Loosely inserted photocopy of review of the book from . 'New African' magazine July/August 1994. "The Chocolate Lady" is a story of high drama, intrigue and politics, in Which treachery and treason are enormously rewarded. The heroine, a brave white woman risks her life in an effort to effect a counter military coup and the return of democratic, civilian rule in an African state. Colonel Kofi Johnson of Bassa organises a successful coup, only to be toppled by the 'Chocolate Lady'. Was the chocolate lady motivated by selfless devotion to her African husband. or was she an operative in the C.I.A? Was she an agent of the Israeli Secret Service, Mossad, as many suspected, or was she driven by altruism? Could the events narrated in the novel happen elsewhere apart from Bassa? Was the avidly womanising colonel really semi impotent? 'The Chocolate Lady', is a gripping, funny story that lays bare gross incidents of murder, juju, voodoo. double-dealing and anti-Semitism in the African state of Bassa. This novel may be banned in some countries for fear that the fiction of Kofi Johnson may become a reality. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 281 pages. AMAMOO, JOSEPH G., The Ghanaian Revolution
AMAMOO, JOSEPH G.
The Ghanaian Revolution
Jafint Co. London, 1988. First Edition, Hardcover (Original Cloth). As New/As New. Signed by Author. Inscribed on the title page: "To Hugh, with best wishes, Joseph Amamoo London, Aug. 24, 1994". When in March 1957 Ghana became the first African country in colonial Africa to achieve Independence, the event was enthusiastically welcomed by millions of Africans and liberal non-Africans. Many African people looked up to Ghana with hope, confidence and pride. These people hoped that the torch of freedom would be held aloft in their own countries also. That Ghana had among the highest per capita income in Africa and the best developed educational and health facilities were but some of the factors establishing Ghana's position of stature in Africa. The question then is, how it comes about that beginning with such historic political and economic achievements, the country deteriorated through a series of military coups that eventually led to the bloody revolution of June 1979. Could the revolution have been avoided? What are the lessons that Ghana itself, and other African countries, can learn? "The Ghanaian Revolution" attempts, clearly and dispassionately, to answer these questions. Size: Octavo (standard book size). 234 pages. Dust Jacket is in very good condition, without tears or chips or other damage. Dust Jacket un-clipped. Gilt titles spine. black cloth. Includes appendices. Quantity Available: 1.
