SPELMAN Henry
Archaeologus, in modum glossarii ad rem antiquam posteriorem, continentis latino-barbara, peregrina, obsoleta, et novatae significationis vocabula, etc.
ApudJohanem Beale, Londini 1626, In-Folio (18,5x29cm), (6) 452pp., relié. Edition originale, rare. Henry Spelman, Archaeologus in Modum Glossarii
Henry Spelman
Archaeologus in Modum Glossarii
London, Johannem Beale, 1626. First edition. Leather. An uncommon first edition of Sir Henry Spelman's glossary of legal terms. This was the first edition of his great glossary, extending to the end of the letter 'L&apos.  The completion was not published until after Spelman's death, which was edited by Dugdale and published in 1664. From the library of the Crum Ewings and the Hamiltons of Lowood house. Sir Henry Spelman was regarded as one of the best informed ecclesiastical lawyers, and 'his Glossary gives him a title to the name of inaugurator philological science in England' (DNB).  This dictionary superseded all previous law dictionaries and was written for Spelman's own use, and was the first English dictionary of legal terms based on philological methods.  In a full calf binding. Externally, smart. Loss to the head and tail of spine due to rubbing. A few light marks to the boards. Contemporary ownership inscriptions in Latin to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to the edges. The occasional light spots to pages. Very Good . Ill.: None. Very Good .
