Book condition : very good. - Decorative copy of this second edition (first book edition) of the Orbis Romanus by the learned Spanheim, a complete history of the progressive admission of Latium, Italy, and the provinces, to the freedom of Rome. (Gibbon). It won him fame as one of the greatest antiquarians of his age. The first edition had appeared in Graevius', Thesaurus antiquitatum Romanarum, volume 11, 1699; Spanheim was a savant historian, excellent numismatic and a succesful German diplomat in France (where he saved a number of protestant lives after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes). From 1702 to the end of his life he was ambassador at the Royal Court in London. Name on title, flyleaf loose, only minor damage and wear to capitals, covers and spine gilt, in all a more than very good, solid and clean copy. ESTC, 147896.
