Chez Scheurler, à La Haye 1738, in-12 (9,5x17cm), (52) 331pp. et (2) 328pp. (3), 2 volumes reliés. Nouvelle édition, illustrée de 5 figures dont la fameuse planche dépliante figurant la papesse accouchant d'un enfant en pleine procession. L'édition originale française, dans la traduction de Jacques Lenfant date de 1694, elle ne contenait qu'un frontispice, qui ne figure d'ailleurs pas dans les éditions suivantes, mais cinq planches ont été ajoutées. Reliures en plein veau marbré d'époque. Dos à nerfs orné. Pièce de titre en maroquin rouge, et de tomaison noire. Mors supérieur du tome I étroitement fendu le long du premier caisson. Un coin émoussé. Bon exemplaire. Histoire incroyable d'une femme qui aurait occupé différent postes ecclésiastiques au Vatican avant d'être nommé pape vers l'an 850 ; le subterfuge aurait été découvert par l'accouchement inopiné du faux pape lors d'une procession. Depuis lors, il est expliqué que les papes avant leur intronisation s'asseoit sur une chaise percée afin qu'on examine les parties génitales. Le second tome est constitué des preuves et dissertations à l'appui de l'histoire, et également une partie du premier tome ; ces preuves historiques et ces études étant manifestement ce qu'il y a de plus remarquable dans l'ouvrage. - Chez Scheurler, à La Haye 1738, in-12 (9,5x17cm), (52) 331pp. et (2) 328pp. (3), 2 volumes reliés. Stanford, British writer and former editor of The Catholic Herald concluded ‘Weighing all th[e] evidence, I am convinced that Pope Joan was an historical figure, though perhaps not all the details about her that have been passed on down the centuries are true’. Book condition : very good. - Decorative copy of this second edition (first book edition) of the Orbis Romanus by the learned Spanheim, a complete history of the progressive admission of Latium, Italy, and the provinces, to the freedom of Rome. (Gibbon). It won him fame as one of the greatest antiquarians of his age. The first edition had appeared in Graevius', Thesaurus antiquitatum Romanarum, volume 11, 1699; Spanheim was a savant historian, excellent numismatic and a succesful German diplomat in France (where he saved a number of protestant lives after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes). From 1702 to the end of his life he was ambassador at the Royal Court in London. Name on title, flyleaf loose, only minor damage and wear to capitals, covers and spine gilt, in all a more than very good, solid and clean copy. ESTC, 147896.
