1903. [DRAWING TEXTBOOK] ASAI CHU^, artist. JIZAIGA KYO^KASHO Dai Yonpen. To^kyo^, Kinko^do^ Shoseki, Meiji 36 [1903]. 1st printing. Oblong 8vo. wrappers. 18.6 x 26.5 cm. This fourth volume of the series A TEXTBOOK OF FREE SKETCHING contains 10 sheets of sumi woodcut reproducing pencil sketches by Asai Chu^ and meant to serve as a guide for students in their drawing classes. The Japanese Education Ministry, the Monbusho^, had commissioned Asai Chu^, one of the foremost artists and educators of the day to create a series of such handbooks for schools. This brief notice is not the place to expand but it should be noted that this series represents an important milestone in the see-saw cultural battle being waged between artistic traditionalists and "modern" Western-style artists. The fact that the Asai Chu^ strove to familiarize students with the use of the pencil rather than the brush is significant in that context. Asai, himself, actually, though an accomplished Western-style oil painter who had studied in France was also a skilled traditional painter and a top-rank graphic designer, as well. It appears he believed in giving students all the tools, all the media, available for their expression. His various textbook series are rightly famous though almost never found, being fragile to begin with and meant to be used by students. This volume is in very good condition - the pages are loose. .

This sixth volume of the series A TEXTBOOK OF FREE SKETCHING contains 6 sheets of color woodcut reproducing watercolor sketches by Asai Chu^ and meant to serve as a guide for students in their drawing classes. The Japanese Education Ministry, the Monbusho^, had commissioned Asai Chu^, one of the foremost artists and educators of the day to create a series of such handbooks for schools. It appears he believed in giving students all the tools, all the media, available for their expression. 1907. [EHON] Asai Chu, artist. TOSEI FUZOKU GOJU-BAN UTA-AWASE. [Modern Customs in a Comparison of 50 Pairs of Poems]. Tokyo: Yoshikawa Hanshichi, Meiji 40 [1907] 2 vols. 24.7 x 18.4 cm. 50 pairs of caricatures, with accompanying poems, all in color woodcut. Save some very slight worming, the overall condition, impressions and colors are very good. This is a copy of the first edition, which preceded the Unsodo of Kyoto reprint from the original blocks. Asai Chu (1856-1907) was one of the two (with Kuroda Seiki) most important oil painters of late Meiji era Japan. This work is in his "Haiga" literati mode and represents his most important foray into book illustration. Ref: Mitchell, p.534. A very good copy of an important book, the blind-patterned covers are a bit soiled. .

Asai Chu., [Tosei Fuzoku Gojuban Utaawase].
Asai Chu.
[Tosei Fuzoku Gojuban Utaawase].
Tokyo, Yoshikawa Hanschichi 1907 (Meiji 40). Two volumes 25x18cm publisher's wrapper with title labels; 52 full page colour woodcuts by Asai. A couple of bits of stitching broken, still an outstanding pair: fresh, crisp, beautifully printed.
¶ First edition of this captivating collection of portraits of couples, if only momentarily. Each of these illustrations accompanies a poem on modern customs; the book's title calls this a poetry competition. Asai, elder and teacher of the school of western painting, fortunately never abandoned the tradition of satirical illustration - though there is more good natured but pointed humour here than harsh satire. This was published just before his death.

¶ Such a fresh and crisp copy of the original edition that I can't bring myself to flatten these out enough to photograph the interior. So the illustrations here, apart from the covers, are from another copy, almost as good, to give an idea of the charm and humour of Asai's observations of the modern Japanese seen in pairs but not necessarily couples. Clarke, J.F. Gates
Catalogue of the Type Specimens of Microlepidoptera in the British Museum (Natural History) described by Edward Meyrick. Vol. I-VIII
BM(NH) 1955-1970 , 1690 b/w plates. . HB. 8 vols, roy. 8vo, orig. buckram, minor fading to spines. A very good set.. Scarce complete set. Edward Meyrick (1854-1938,) was an English schoolmaster and micro-lepidopterist. From 1877-1886 he taught in Australia and New Zealand, during this time he amassed a large collection of micro-lepidoptera from these regions. In 1887 he returned to England, becoming a teacher at Marlborough School. He developed an extensive network of international contributors, so his vast collection of 100,000 microlepidoptera also included specimens from the Asiatic region, China, Japan, Formosa, Africa, Madagascar and America. He described over 14,000 species and hundreds of new genera. Meyrick bequeathed his collection to The Natural History Museum, London.N.D. Riley states in the preface to this work that Meyrick ‘for almost half a century Meyrick dominated this field. However, the use of morphological characters that Meyrick steadfastly refused to recognise began eventually to cast doubts on some of his conclusions, and it became a matter of importance that Meyrick’s type specimens should be re-examined with the aid of the latest techniques’. The Canadian-American microlepidopterist John Frederick Gates Clarke (1905-1990) was ‘seconded by the United States Department of Agriculture for duty in the British Museum (Natural History) for a period of two and a half years’, to publish a work that would ‘provide the solutions of many taxonomic puzzles’. Initially intended to be published in at least four volumes, the work was finally completed in eight. Alexader B. Klots described this undertaking in the Quarterly Journal of Biology, Vol 31(2), 1956 as ‘certainly one of the largest and most complex, painstaking, and essential studies in modern systematics’, describing the volumes as having ‘monumental importance in the systematics of the taxa concerned in all parts of the world. They will remain for a very long time as outstanding examples of international cooperation and of the highest level of modern systematics’..

Shunga. Sex and pleasure in Japanse art
October 2013, 24,5 x 28,9 cm), 560 pp. English text, 420 colour ills., hardcover
¶ In early modern Japan thousands of sexually explicit paintings, prints, and illustrated books with texts were produced, euphemistically called spring pictures ( shunga ) . Frequent ly tender, funny and beautiful, shunga were mostly done within the popular school known as pictures of the floating world ( ukiyo - e ), by celebrated artists such as Utamaro and Hokusai. Shunga is in some ways a unique phenomenon in pre - modern world cultu re, in terms of the quantity, the quality and the nature of the art that was produced. This catalogue of a major international exhibition aims to answer some key questions about what is shunga and why it was produced. In particular the social and cultura l contexts for sex art in Japan are explored . Erotic Japanese art was heavily suppressed in Japan from the 1870s onwards as part of a process of cultural modernisation that imported many contemporary western moral values. Only in the last twenty years or so has it been possible to publish unexpurgated examples in Japan and this landmark book places e rotic Japanese art in its historical and cultural context for the first time. Drawing on the latest scholarship and featuring over 400 images of works from major public and private collections, this important book looks at painted and printed erotic images produced in Japan during the Edo period (1600 1868) and early Meiji era (1868 1912). These are related to the wider contexts of literature, the atre, the culture of the pleasure quarters, and urban consumerism

COLLIER, H.
Recent Advances in Chemical Information
Cambridge, Royal Society of Chemistry. 1992. (ISBN: 0851864961). Hardcover. Ex - Library, usual stickers and stamps on the inside of the cover, FEP and on the page block. This provides an overview of recent developments in electronic information technology and systems for the chemical industry. It features papers on general chemical information and patents, as well as biotechnology. It contains contributions from France, Germany, the USA, the UK, Japan and Switzerland. Chemical information - in a broad sense - has always had something of a pioneering role in the information world, due partly to its acute needs for highly specific searching and highly flexible retrieval. The present volume aims to provide the latest information on the subject, including the views of both producers and users of information services. Additionally, it illustrates how modern information technology is beginning to affect the complex areas of chemical and patent information. Very Good/No Dust Jacket.
