Cooper, Thomas Sidney. (1803-1902). English animal and landscape painter. He was nickname "Cow Cooper".
Autograph Letter Signed by English Animal and Landscape Painter Thomas Sidney Cooper Sending His Autograph to a Young Lady, Adding Eight Lines of Verse and Signing Again with His Initials.
Vernon Holme, Harbledown, Kent: July 31, 1869, 1869. Vernon Holme, Harbledown, Kent: July 31, 1869. 1869. Very good. - 23 words plus 8 lines of verse are penned in black ink, filling one side of a sheet of his personalized, 7 inch high by 4-1/2 inch wide, black- bordered letterhead with his address printed at top right beside a vignette featuring 4 miniature cows. The letter has been mounted on a slightly larger piece of cream card. Signed "Thomas Sidney Cooper". There are 2 small, light stains to the left margin. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.

Cooper sends his autograph, commenting: "I hope the Young Lady will more highly esteem the Autograph accompanied by the following lines". After signing the letter he adds eight lines of verse beginning: "Tis calm assurance 'All is Well' / Though how or where I cannot tell". Below the verse he writes "This is faith" and signs again with his initials.

Thomas Sidney Cooper [1803-1902] was an English landscape painter noted for his images of cattle and farm animals. This earned him the name "Cow Cooper"--hence the vignette of cows on his letterhead. He was born in Canterbury, Kent and his home, Vernon Holme, Harbledown, Kent, which is now a school, is listed among the sites to see when visiting Canterbury. Very good .

anonymous [ Youatt, William (1776-1847)]
The Horse; With a Treatise on Draught; and a Copious Index
London, Baldwin and Cradock, 1831. 1st Edition, Later boards.. 23x15cm, vii,472 pp.. Textual illustrations. Later binder's blind boards. VG.
¶ Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge" ["William Youatt was born in Exeter, the son of a surgeon. He was educated for the ministry, and in 1810 left Devonshire and moved to London. In 1812 or 1813 he joined a veterinary practice in London, apprenticing with the veterinarian, who was not a graduate of the Royal Veterinary College and therefore not registered. Because of this, when Youatt enrolled in the College at almost 40 years of age, he was summarily dismissed without a diploma. He remained a partner in this practice, where, after 12 years the business passed into his hands. In 1828 Youatt began to give private lectures and demonstrations to veterinary students, and later, he put his lectures into printed form and published them monthly in the Veterinarian, a professional journal. In 1830, Youatt began writing a series of handbooks on farm animals for the Library of Useful Knowledge, and continued to produce these for ten years. These works were the equivalent of modern-day textbooks, containing a wealth of information. Youatt became highly esteemed in his chosen profession and was perhaps the most influential veterinarian of his day. Of him, Charles Darwin said, "I have generally found Youatt an accurate man, & a very sagacious man, for I knew him personally." In 1838 the Royal Agricultural Society of England was founded, and Youatt was one of the original members, and the chairman of the veterinary committee. He is credited with many rational developments in veterinary medicine...." - The Border Collie Museum

Contemporary red half morocco, gold-tooled spine, gold-blocked boards with the note "offert par le Minstre de l'Agriculture", gilt edges.
[6], LXXIV, [2]; [4], [10] pp.Presentation copy of one of the most beautifully produced works on cattle, by the "zootechnician", Émile Baudement (1810-1864). The 87 plates of bovine animals are arranged by origin, each region with its own part-title: England, Holland and Denmark, Switzerland and Germany, (the empire of) Austria, and France. Many of the excellent plates are after photographs by Adrien Nadar. Artists like Emile van Marcke, Isodore Bonheur and Barye contributed to this work. "The plates were produced by a mixed process of photographic transposing on to a metal plate (heliography) followed by handwork of various kinds - soft ground etching, mezzotint and aquatint, the background tint being achieved by lithography" (Boalch). While regular copies are bound in green half roan, with plain cloth sides, the present set is bound in red half morocco, with gold-blocked red cloth sides with the note "offert par le Minstre de l'Agriculture". All copies include a preliminary "rapport" on the work by this ministry on two letterpress pages. Some minor, professional restorations to the spines and the atlas volume with a discolouration and an endleaf partly detached. Some occasional foxing, but otherwise in very good condition.l D.H. Boalch, Prints and paintings of British farm livestock; Nissen, ZBI 257.
