BRANDT, SIEGMUND & HANS D. DAHMEN
The Picture Book of Quantum Mechanics
New York: Springer-Verlag, 1995. Second Edition. Hardcover. ISBN: 0387943803. A bright, solid book. As new, text unmarked ; B&W Illustrations; 9.30 X 6.30 X 1.20 inches; 423 pages; "In studying classical mechanics, students are often helped by the fact that intuitions developed in everday life can give one a good idea of the behavior of the idealized objects dealt with in introductory courses. In addition, equations encountered are sufficiently simple to solve even in relatively complex situations that students can further develop their intution by solving problems. In learning quantum theory, however, intutions developed for the classical world fail, and the equations to be solved are sufficiently complex that they can readily be solved without a computer only for the simplest situations. This book represents an attempt to jump the hurdle to an intuitive understanding of wave mechanics by using illustrations profusely to present the time evolution and parameter dependence of wave functions in a wide variety of situations. Most of the illustrations are computer-generated solutions of the Schr dinger equation for one- and three-dimensional systems. The situations discussed range from the simple particle in a box through resonant scattering in one dimension to the hydrogen atom and Regge classification of resonant scattering. This edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded to include a discussion of spin and magnetic resonance.". Very Good+ with No dust jacket as issued .

A Short History of Nearly Everything
Toronto: Anchor Canada, 2004. Reprint. Paperback. ISBN: 0385660049. Card covers show light shelf wear, crease down back cover.; A bright, solid book.; Trade PB; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 544 pages; "Taking as territory everything from the Big Bang to the rise of civilization, Bryson seeks to understand how we got from there being nothing at all to there being us. To that end, he has attached himself to a host of the world’s most advanced (and often obsessed) archaeologists, anthropologists, and mathematicians, travelling to their offices, laboratories, and field camps. He has read (or tried to read) their books, pestered them with questions, apprenticed himself to their powerful minds. A Short History of Nearly Everything is the record of this quest, and it is a sometimes profound, sometimes funny, and always supremely clear and entertaining adventure in the realms of human knowledge". Isaac Newton's Natural Philosophy
Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 2001. Softcover. ISBN: 0262024772. Only slight wear to card covers.; A bright, solid book, text unmarked; Trade PB; Dibner Institute Studies in the History of Science and Technology; B&W Illustrations; 9.12 X 6.22 X 0.93 inches; 354 pages; From the back cover: "The book is divided into two parts. The essays in Part 1 shed new light on Newton's motivations and the sources of his method. The essays in Part 2 explore Newton's mathematical philosophy and his development of rational mechanics and celestial dynamics." Newton studies have undergone radical changes in the last half-century as more of his work has been uncovered and more details of his life and intellectual context have come to light. This volume singles out two strands in recent Newton studies: the intellectual background to Newton's scientific thought and both specific and general aspects of his technical science. The essays make new claims concerning Newton's mathematical methods, experimental investigations, and motivations, as well as the effect that his long presence had on science in England. The book is divided into two parts. The essays in part I shed new light on Newton's motivations and the sources of his method. The essays in part II explore Newton's mathematical philosophy and his development of rational mechanics and celestial dynamics. An appendix includes the last paper by Newton biographer Richard W. Westfall, examining some of the ways that mathematics came to be used in the age of Newton in pursuits and domains other than theoretical or rational mechanics.. Near Fine .

Only defect is a short closed tear top front panel of dustjacket ; A near-fine volume in a near-fine DJ, dustjacket in Mylar, unclipped. ; 9.2 X 6.2 X 1.2 inches; 329 pages; "Leonardo da Vinci’s pioneering scientific work was virtually unknown during his lifetime. Now acclaimed scientist and bestselling author Fritjof Capra reveals that Leonardo was in many ways the unacknowledged “father of modern science.” Drawing on an examination of over 6,000 pages of Leonardo’s surviving notebooks, Capra explains that Leonardo approached scientific knowledge with the eyes of an artist. Through his studies of living and nonliving forms, from architecture and human anatomy to the turbulence of water and the growth patterns of grasses, he pioneered the empirical, systematic approach to the observation of nature—what is now known as the scientific method. Leonardo's scientific explorations were extraordinarily wide-ranging. He studied the flight patterns of birds to create some of the first human flying machines. Using his understanding of weights and levers and trajectories and forces, he designed military weapons and defenses, and was in fact regarded as one of the foremost military engineers of his era. He studied optics, the nature of light, and the workings of the human heart and circulatory system. Because of his vast knowledge of hydraulics, he was hired to create designs for rebuilding the infrastructure of Milan and the plain of Lombardy, employing the very principles still used by city planners today. He was a mechanical genius, and yet his worldview was not mechanistic but organic and ecological. This is why, in Capra's view, Leonardo's science—centuries ahead of his time in a host of fields—is eminently relevant to our time. Enhanced with fifty beautiful sepia-toned illustrations".
