The Stolen Story and Other Newspaper Stories New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1899. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [some shelfwear to bottom edges of covers, moderate bumping to bottom corners, one-time owner's signature and date (in year of publication) on ffep, gilt lettering on spine lightly rubbed but still easily readable, top edge gilt]. (B&W frontispiece + 1 B&W plate) Seven tales of journalistic life, with titles like "The New Reporter," "The City Editor's Conscience" and "The Cub Reporter and the King of Spain." An early work by this Illinois-born author and playwright, who later became the first recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his 1918 play "Why Marry?" But never mind all that, because this book is only listed here as a test for you (yes, you) -- the best kind of test, because I'm going to tell you the answer. Here's the deal: this book is widely available on that Internet thing, from vendors on multiple continents, in a "print-on-demand" (POD) format. Prices range from about $13 to about $104, for absolutely no discernible (or sensible) reason. As of this writing, there are 91 such listings for this title on just one bookselling site; by the time you read this, there will probably be well over a hundred. So if ALL YOU WANT is to read the damn thing, and will be happy with a brand-spanking-new, generically-covered, cheesy-looking paperback, printed JUST FOR YOU by some robot, then by all means buy one of those. But if it's THE BOOK you want, the real, printed-and-bound in 1899 deal -- and that IS the answer to our test -- then here it is, accompanied by my personal guarantee that you'll feel so much better (about yourself) for having made that choice.. Very Good . -- ReadInkBook number: 17568 USD 50.00 [Appr.: EURO 40 | £UK 32 | JP¥ 3977] Catalogue: *Catalog Number 3
