Gebaseerd op een reisverslag uit 1789 toen China nog zeer moeilijk te verkennen was door buitenlanders en vele gebieden verboden terrein was. Mason legt daarop de nadruk in zijn voorwoord (gedateerd 4/5/1800). De oorspronkelijk uitgave van 'The Costume of China' dateert van 1804-1805. Alhoewel de nadruk ligt op de kostumering en het kleurgebruik, biedt het werk toch ook nogal wat informatie over gewoonten, gebruiken, materialen en technieken. Naam op het schutblad. Voor het overige in uitstekende staat.
