The League of Youth; A Doll's House; The Lady from the Sea Harmondsworth, Penguin Books; Penguin Classics. 1965, 39th printing. (ISBN: 0140441468) Trade Paperback , 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 335 pp.; 20 cm. Good+. Firm binding, with one spine crease. Clean inside copy. Browning. Cover title: A Doll's House and Other Plays. "The plays in this volume, each written a decade apart, demonstrate different sides of Henrik Ibsen's genius, but all deal with themes of alienation from society and the breaking down of convention. A Doll's House (1879) portrays a woman questioning her duty to her husband and seeking to escape from the stifling confines of her marriage -- a theme that shocked contemporary audiences and established Ibsen's name outside Scandinavia. In The League of Youth (1869), his first prose drama, Ibsen created a vivid comedy about a hypocritical politician, and in The Lady from the Sea (1888) he depicts a woman who longs for the life she enjoyed by the sea before she was married. Peter Watts' lively modern translation is accompanied by an introduction in which he examines Ibsen’s life and times, with individual discussions of the three plays." - Publisher. Good. Peter Watts' lively modern translation is accompanied by an introduction in which he examines Ibsen's life and times, with individual discussions of the three plays. / Henrik Ibsen was born of well-to-do parents at Skien, a small Norwegian coastal town, on March 20, 1828. In 1836 his father went bankrupt, and the family was reduced to near poverty. At the age of fifteen, he was apprenticed to an apothecary in Grimstad. In 1850 Ibsen ventured to Christiania -- present-day Oslo -- as a student, with the hope of becoming a doctor. On the strength of his first two plays he was appointed 'theater-poet' to the new Bergen National Theater, where he wrote five conventional romantic and historical dramas and absorbed the elements of his craft. In 1857 he was called to the directorship of the financially unsound Christiania Norwegian Theater, which failed in 1862. In 1864, exhausted and enraged by the frustration of his efforts toward a national drama and theater, he quit Norway for what became twenty-seven years of voluntary exile abroad. In Italy he wrote the volcanic Brand (1866), which made his reputation and secured him a poet's stipend from the government. Its companion piece, the phantasmagoric Peer Gynt, followed in 1867, then the immense double play, Emperor and Galilean (1873), expressing his philosophy of civilization. Meanwhile, having moved to Germany, Ibsen had been searching for a new style. With The Pillars of Society he found it; this became the first of twelve plays, appearing at two-year intervals, that confirmed his international standing as the foremost dramatist of his age. In 1900 Ibsen suffered the first of several strokes that incapacitated him. He died in Oslo on May 23, 1906." - Publisher. Very Good. Book number: 037704 USD 5.00 [Appr.: EURO 4 | £UK 3.25 | JP¥ 398]

Three Plays by August Strindberg: The Father; Miss Julia; Easter (Penguin Classics) Penguin Books, 1977. Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. Clean copy with light corner edge wear, some ink to front & back of half title page. 1977 Mass Market Paperback. 174 pp. "The three plays in this volume focus on the tumultuous relationships between men and women, whether they are father and daughter, brother and sister or lovers. "Miss Julie" is a ruthlessly realistic depiction of an upper class woman's seduction of a servant, emphasizing the differences and the antagonism between them. In "The Father", a man is brought to madness and driven out of his home by the suspicion that his daughter is not his own child, while "Easter" centres on a family in need of redemption for its sins and suffering, finding forgiveness at a season of rebirth. Strindberg's acute psychological analysis and his dramatization of naked emotion within a naturalistic domestic setting make him one of the great innovators of the modern theatre..August Strindberg, born in Stockholm in 1849, was the author of more than fifty plays, as well as novels, short stories, poems and an autobiography. Few of his earlier plays are remembered, but from the 1880s he began to write with great intensity. He died in 1912. Peter Watts also translated Ghosts and Other Plays for the Penguin Classics. He died in 1972.". Book number: 1513074 USD 2.70 [Appr.: EURO 2.25 | £UK 1.75 | JP¥ 215]
