Illustrated with a folding frontispiece map and 42 engraved views, maps, and plans of which 41 are folding. First published in 1748, the account of this famous and unfortunate expedition around the world by Anson contains descriptions of the island of Madeira, Brazil, Port St. Julian, Cape Horn, the coast of Mexico, Macao, etc. including several engraved views and plans in the Americas. University library bookplate, stamped "withdrawn," on the front pastedown. Some toning to plates, a little offsetting and scattered spotting, staining to the margin of one map. Hinges reinforced, corners slightly worn. Very Good or better Hill pages 317-18; Sabin 1629: "It is called by some English writers a masterpiece of composition; but it appears to have been made amusing at the expense of truth. The progress of science formed no part of this expedition, which was prepared for attacking the Spanish possessions and shipping in the South Sea, and which was so successful, that the prize money divided amongst the officers and crews amounted to more than a million sterling.
