Twee zich neutraal wanende blanken ondernemen een gevaarlijke tocht in een door oorlog geteisterd Afrikaans land en raken gaandeweg in gewetensconflict over hun aanwezigheid daar. Naast dit titelverhaal bevat deze bundel (in 1971 bekroond met de Booker-Prize een eerdere vertaling verscheen in 1973) enkele kortere verhalen over het isolement van gekleurde immigranten in de westerse samenleving, aangevuld met wat documentaire reisimpressies. Zoals in veel van Naipauls oeuvre (Trinidad, 1932) is hier de menselijke waardigheid in het geding te midden van armoede, corruptie en een besmeurd koloniaal verleden. Met de voor veel van zijn romans zo kenmerkende realistische, soms exotische sfeertekeningen brengt Naipaul de lezer in vervoering. En passant dringt hij door tot de diepste spelonken van het menselijk geweten. Volle bladspiegel, normale druk.
