ELEMENTS OF EUCLID. 1829. [MENDENHALL, Thomas C.] SIMSON, Robert. THE ELEMENTS OF EUCLID: viz, the first six books, together with the eleventh and twelfth. Philadelphia: Robert Desilver and Thomas Desilver, 1829. Octavo. 516 pp. Contemporary law calf, abraded and soiled, with top board detached. Boyhood signature of Thomas C. Mendenhall, dated 1858, on the front free endpaper. Housed in a protective clamshell box. Mendenhall (American, 1841-1924), a scientist and educator, became the first professor at the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Ohio State University) when he was hired in 1873. He was professor of physics and mechanics there until 1878, the year he was recruited on the recommendation of Edward S. Morse to help in the modernization of Meiji Era Japan as one of the o-yatoi gaikokujin (foreign experts). While professor at the University of Tokyo, he developed the government's meteorological service and was a key figure in Japan's development of scientific education. He returned the U.S. and and taught at Ohio State from 1881 until 1884. He went on to serve as president of Rose Polytechnic Institute, in Terre Haute, Indiana, from 1886 to 1889, and as president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts from 1894 to 1901. Mendenhall was elected president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1889 However, besides the intrinsic interest of a book that belonged to Mendenhall, it is the two laid-in newspaper clippings that reveal the true significance of this book and its importance to him: They tell the Horatio Alger-like story of how young Mendenhall, a farm boy, bought this book for a dollar with his own hard-earned money and, without realizing it, initiated his long and illustrious career in science and education.
