Adorno begleitete die letzten Werke Thomas Manns, den Erwählten, Die Betrogene und die Wiederaufnahme des Felix Krull, mit eingehen Kommentaren und nicht selten mit begeistertem Zuspruch. Selbst sehr private Fragen von entscheidender persönlicher Bedeutung, wie die mit grosser Aufrichtigkeit geführte Diskussion um die Rückkehr aus der Emigration, bleiben im Briefwechsel nicht ausgespart. Edition originale de la traduction française au format in-12 (suivant l'édition in-8 tellière). Thomas Mann, que ses enfants et ses proches appelaient ' le magicien ' et qui s'intéressait à tout, s'est naturellement intéressé à la magie. Le magicien dont on trouvera le portrait dans Mario et le magicien est un inquiétant hypnotiseur de foire. Il exerce sur son petit public un pouvoir comparable à celui des dictateurs sur les foules. Aussi cette nouvelle, qui raconte des vacances familiales dans l'Italie mussolinienne, a-t-elle pu apparaître comme une satire du fascisme. Elle est, plus généralement, une interrogation sur la nature de la volonté et sur les limites de la liberté individuelle. Les récits qui suivent l'apologue du magicien : Expériences occultes, Doux sommeil, Seize ans, entre autres, prolongent cette exploration de l'inconnu où l'auteur de la Montagne magique est vraiment dans son élément. Petite auréole claire en marge des plats. Quelques passages surlignés à la mine de plomb. Du reste, très belle condition.

Au début du siècle dernier, Hans Castrop, un jeune bourgeois allemand, se rend pour quelques jours à Davos auprès de son cousin Joachim, en traitement dans un sanatorium. Envoûté par l'esprit du lieu, le personnage central de 'La Montagne magique' de Thomas Mann restera sept ans dans la station grisonne.. L'oeuvre fait écho à La Mort à Venise publié 12 ans plus tôt. L'intention primitive de l'auteur était de faire "une contrepartie satirique de La Mort à Venise dont le théme serait la séduction de la mort et de la maladie". Entre temps, la Première Guerre mondiale eut lieu et Thomas Mann intégra "tous les problèmes que la guerre avait rendus plus aigus et plus actuels". (Maurice Betz). Plats et dos à l'éclat légèrement altéré. Ex-libris manuscrit au premier feuillet. Du reste, belle condition.

A little movement to the spine but all is secure. Vibrant turquoise dust jacket is intact but has a taped repair of approx 3.5" to the front cover in the top left hand corner (tape on the inside). Some edgewear and minor tears, more so to the top edge. Despite this we think it is still rather nice with a man dressed in a dinner jacket and a list of the contributors alongside. Not price-clipped. N. B. At the rear of the book is an Appendix, comprising a 35 page check-list of contributions of literary import to esquire Magazine 1933 - 1958, compiled by E R Hagemann and James E Marsh. This is a scarce and sought after title by the Czech author, nephew of the second president of Czechoslovakia, exiled during the war in England. The plot is formed on the background of Nazi occupation of the so called Sudetenland, the regions near the border with Germany, which were annexed by Hitler after the Munich Agreement of 1938. The war is about to end, and the villagers are revolting against the Germans. The book's classification had to be downgraded because of a spot on spine, where the jacket is holed and the exposed cloth is severely discoloured, with two small tears. The rest of the book is good+, text block is tight, with very little tanning of pages. 368pp. Fair - Good/Fair.
