A Discourse of the Grounds and Reasons of the Cristian [Christian] Religion. In two Parts

London, 1724. 8vo, lxii + table of contents (vi) + 284pp. Newly rebacked in calf with original morocco label laid down, original calf boards preserved, boards slightly discolored and worn, slight foxing to a few leaves. A scarce book. Overall good condition. Collins was among the most influential deists of the early 18th century and a friend of John Locke. His book 'Discourse on Freethinking' stirred the pen of Swift to write the ironic reply: 'Mr. Collins' Discourse of Freethinking put into Plain English by way of Abstract, for the use of the Poor.' When the present book was published it generated no less than 35 published responses. It was called by Warburton one of the most plausible attacks ever made against Christianity and occasioned the book by E. Chandler, bishop of Lichfield, titled 'Literal Scheme of Prophecy considered' written to refute it. This book is from the library of scientist Thomas Henry Huxley and is signed twice by him - once on the first blank leaf and a second time on the title-page. Huxley was known as 'Darwin's Bulldog' for his support of Darwin's evolutionary theory.
