¶ Deze bloemlezing bevat godsdienstige poëzie van een veertigtal zeventiende-eeuwse auteurs. Elk hoofdstuk wordt ingeleid met enkele biografische gegevens over de auteur en met een korte beschrijving van de inhoud van de gekozen gedichten. De teksten zijn alle gebaseerd op originele bronnen. Deze editie begint met een 'Jubel-jaar-lied', een vrome wens voor het jaar 1600, van Hendrick L. Spiegel en besluit met een aantal polemisch getoonzette verzen van Geertruid Gordon van rond 1700. Daartussen is het hele spectrum van de godsdienstige literatuur van die tijd vertegenwoordigd: van simpel lied tot hoog-literair vormgegeven epos, van aandachtige meditatie tot honende aanval op andersdenkenden, van orthodoxe tot vrijzinnige uitingen. Ook de stem van de onverschillige cynicus: de geestelijke minnevlammen van Matthijs van der Merwede ontbreekt niet. De dichtkunst van de Gouden Eeuw is door het religieuze denken bepaald. Dichters verwoorden hun angst en hun schuldbesef, maar ook vertrouwen op de goede afloop. Ze roepen enerzijds op tot bekering en anderzijds vechten ze de theologische twisten van hun tijd uit over de ware leer. De samenstellers hebben voor een rijke keuze uit hun werk gezorgd.
