Ballantine 1997 Paperback, 152pp. This baseball novel has a very Hemingway-esque feel to it with its staccato dialog and abbreviated structure but it works at a readable level. A detailed knowledge of the game is not essential but it helps in places. Shaara certainly imbues his central character with enough human qualities to make the reader sympathetic which in itself means you are anxious to discover the conclusion of the story.
