[Seferis' inscription appears to be the opening lines of his famed poem "Letter to Rex Warner", written by Seferis as a tribute to Warner & to their friendship.] An extraordinary example of Kazantzakis' magnum opus & the basis for the 1964 film of the same name starring Anthony Quinn ]Nominated for an Oscar], Alan Bates, Lila Kedrova, Irene Papas, & Sotiris Moustakas & directed by Cypriot Michael Cacoyannis, which brought Kazantzakis worldwide fame. The 1968 musical, Zorba followed. Nominated for the 1957 Nobel Prize in Literature, Kazantzakis fell one vote short of Albert Camus who was awarded that year's Prize. This remarkable copy of Nikos Kazantzakis' best-known work has been Inscribed by Seferis, a Greek Diplomat & Ambassador to the UK, & one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. The recipient, Rex Warner, his good friend, frequent translator, & fellow author (whose excellent translations of Seferis' works were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Nobel) with Seferis writing out a portion of his own Tribute poetry in Greek. The success of Zorba the Greek in 1964 was the high water mark of Anthony Quinn's career & resulting in nominations for Best Actor including the Oscars, Best Foreign Actor BAFTA Awards & the Golden Globes; Winning the National Board of Review Award for Best Actor.
