32 Counties. Photographs of Ireland by Donovan Wylie. With new writing by thirty-two Irish writers. Place of Printing, Secker & Warburg, 1989. First Edition. Size: Size. Pages: Pages (X, 235 pages.) Original Hardcover with dustjacket. Very good condition with only minor signs of wear. Donovan Wylie was born in 1971 in Belfast. He left school at the age of sixteen and began taking photographs full-time. His first major one-man exhibition of photographs of Irish gypsy families, 'Travellers', was a highlight of the 1988 'Sense of Ireland' Festival at Riverside Studios, London. This is not the Ireland of picture-postcards and coffee-table books, but a world caught in its own past and poverty and deprivation of the present; an island nation with a unique and turbulent history struggling for economic health in a climate of unemployment, emigration and internal conflict. Wylie's remarkable photographic journey gives the book its narrative and structure, but each county is also represented by a piece of new writing by an appropriate author. Edna O'Brien reminisces about County Clare, her birthplace and the setting of "The Country Girls", while Seamus Heaney contributes a suite of six new poems, "Five Derry Glosses" in exile, William Trevor writes on Cork, and Brian Moore about his adopted county, Donegal. From the lowlands of Leitrim, described by John McGahern, to the mountains of Mayo evoked in the poems of Michael Longley, there is an astonishing range of geography, history and inherited culture. Anne Devlin and Medbh McGuckian present a bittersweet picture of life in the North, Kerryman Brendan Kennelly explains the importance of drink and conversation, and John Banville writes a ghost sonata for Wexford. The cream of Irish writing is represented, and the texts and photographs work to create a variety of mood that reflects a proud, beleaguered, passionate country and the men, women and children that give it hear.
