Mit Geschützen bestückt, die zumeist aus der Zeit der Kaiserlichen Marine stammten, wagten die ungepanzerten ehemaligen Seebäder-, Passagier- oder Frachtschiffe Vorstöße, die den ahnungslosen Gegner immer wieder vor taktische Probleme stellten. Unbeobachtet, meist zur Mitternachtsstunde, wurden die Minen gelegt. Mit Ausnahme der Schiffsführung kannten selbst die Besatzungen die Sperrlagen nicht.
