"To Pop, Our Genial Host. This book is a Private Collection and is Not for Sale." (Berkeley): (The Gun Club), (n. d.). 5-1/2" x 8". 1st edition. SIGNED and dated (1918- 1921) by, presumably, 16 members of the secret society, to a preliminary blank. [12], 13-210, [2 (blank)] pp. Flexible red leather binding with gilt stamped insignia to front cover. Red/pink marbled endpapers., top of rear board. A VG copy of a quite rare UC Berkeley item. ¶ This a privately printed collection of poetry (presumably issued in late 1917), commissioned by the Gun Club of UC Berkeley, a secret society which was founded in the early 1900s comprised solely of UC Berkeley School of Law men (Boalt Hall) who "lived for the drink and died by the gun". Time Magazine has reported that the members of the society gathered (on Thursdays, as stated in the last poem) at the Rathskeller Saloon in downtown Oakland to drink and recite poetry to each other. This book with a printed dedication "To Pop, Our Genial Host", which refers to Pop Kessler, owner of the Rathskeller. The last poem in the book, by Charles R. Knox (no doubt a Gun Club member, dated: "Fort MacArthur, San Pedro, California. Sept. 4, 1917") is named "To Pop Kessler" and apparently is the only original work within the text, the rest reprinting popular authors of the day, such as Service, Poe, Kipling, Burgess & Harte. A rare momento from early 20th C UC Berkeley college life. Tavistock Books, ABAABook number: 38106 USD 825.00 [Appr.: EURO 620.75 | £UK 520 | JP¥ 81947]
