BELLARMINUS, ROBERTUS (1542-1621)
Disputationum De controversiis Christianae Fidei, adversus huius temporis haereticos. Tribus tomis comprehensae. (3 vols.) Editio secunda - tertia.
Ingolstadt, David Sartorius, 1590-1593, Cont. vellum, modern hvellum, 3 vols. Vol 1 is from the 3rd. ed., vols. 2 and 3 of the second. Folio. All volumes have some staining inside. The first ed. appeared at Sartorius' in 3 vols. from 1587-1589, the second edition with the same publisher already from 1588-1593 and the third edition again at Sartorius' in 1590. Due to the great demand for this work the editions overlap. It is therefore not strange that in this set the first volume is from the 3rd. ed. of 1590, in combination with vols. 2 and 3 of the second ed., printed successively in 1591 and 1593. Vol. 2 has been rebound in modern half-vellum, vols. 1 and 3 retain the original uniform vellum binding (slight wear). A complete set of this early edition of an extremely important work against the Reformation (from the period itself) is very rarely met with.

BELLARMINUS, ROBERTUS (1542-1621).
Explanatio in Psalmos, aucthore Roberto Bellarmino...nova editio, a mendis quibus aliae scatebant, expurgata.
Parisiis, sumptibus Ioannis Iost, 1644. 10, (6 index), 1088, (24 index rerum notabilium) pp. Contemporary vellum. Large 8vo, 19x24 cm; Some decorated initials, head- and tailpieces, vignette on title-page. Very good copy. Mailorder only - Alleen verzending mogelijk. Roberto Francesco Romolo Bellarmino, was a famous Roman Catholic controversialist. He was the first Jesuit to teach at the university of Louvain, where he stayed for seven years. He made extensive studies in the Fathers and medieval theologians, that gave him the material for his book De scriptoribus ecclesiasticis (Rome, 1613). Finally he learned Hebrew, and wrote his often reprinted grammar. In 1592 Bellarmine was made Rector of the Roman College, and in 1595 Provincial of Naples. In 1597 Clement VIII recalled him to Rome and made him his own theologian and likewise Examiner of Bishops and Consultor of the Holy Office. Further, in 1599 he made him Cardinal-Priest of the title of Santa Maria in viâ, alleging as his reason for this promotion that the Church of God had not his equal in learning. In his commentary on the book of Psalms, first published in 1611, Bellarmin compares and interprets the Hebrew and Vulgate versions of the text, sometimes somewhat uncritically preferring the latter. Hurter I, 546vv.; 1 copy in NCC (Leeuwarden); This edition not in BNF (2 copies in Catalogue Collectif de France); not in NUC; Not in BLPC; Stain in upper right corner of title-page, small stamp and pencil mark on flyleaf, soiling on binding notably on upper cover..
