["Nobel laureate Robert Fogel's compelling new study examines health, nutrition and technology over the last three centuries and beyond. Throughout most of human history, chronic malnutrition has been the norm. During the past three centuries, however, a synergy between improvements in productive technology and in human physiology has enabled humans to more than double their average longevity and to increase their average body size by over 50 per cent. Larger, healthier humans have contributed to the acceleration of economic growth and technological change, resulting in reduced economic inequality, declining hours of work and a corresponding increase in leisure time. Increased longevity has also brought increased demand for health care. Professor Fogel argues that health care should be viewed as the growth industry of the twenty-first century and systems of financing it should be reformed. His book will be essential reading for all those interested in economics, demography, history and health care policy." - publisher's description]

FOGEL, ROBERT WILLIAM (SIGNED) NOBEL LAUREATE IN ECONOMICS.
The Fourth Great Awakening. And the Future of Egalitarianism.
Chicago:, University of Chicago,, 2000.. Hardcover. Signed & Inscribed By Robert Fogel. Fine Hardback First Edition in a Near Fine Dust Jacket. 8vo. 383 Pp. Robert Fogel (1926- ) is a renowned economist best known for research on the role of railways in the economic development of the United States and the importance of slavery as an institution and its economic role in the USA. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics (with Douglass C. North) in 1993 for "Having renewed research in economic history by applying economic theory and quantitative methods in order to explain economic and institutional changes". This volume focuses on the present. In it Dr. Fogel argues that our recent and current ethical and political crises are the most recent manifestations of man's attempt to bring human institutions into balance with the massive technological changes that are transforming the economy and periodically destabilizing the prevailing culture.

FOGEL, ROBERT WILLIAM (SIGNED). NOBEL LAUREATE IN ECONOMICS (1993).
The Slavery Debates 1952-1990. A Retrospective.
Baton Rouge LA:, Louisiana State University,, 2003. First Edition. Hardcover. Signed By Robert Fogel without Personalization. An As New Hardback Stated First Edition First Printing in an As New Dust Jacket. 8vo. Ix, 106 Pp. As New, Robert Fogel (1926- ) is a renowned economist best known for research on the role of railways in the economic development of the United States and the importance of slavery as an institution and its economic role in the USA. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics (with Douglass C. North) in 1993 for "Having renewed research in economic history by applying economic theory and quantitative methods in order to explain economic and institutional changes". The current volume is a detailed view of the a 38 year period that saw fierce debate concerning the era of slavery in the United States. Dr. Fogel himself (with Stanley Engerman) fueled much of this debate with their controversial work "Time on the Cross" (1974) which argued that slavery was profitable and efficient labor and that economic growth and technologic progress could occur in a deeply flawed and immoral system. The furor that arose went so far in some quarters as to accuse the authors of racism. That work was followed by "Without Consent or Contract: The Rise and Fall of American Slavery" (1989) in which Dr. Fogel presented the context in which slavery arose and the factors which led to its demise. He points particularly to the rise of the abolition movement and the moral climate which led Americans to conclude that slavery was morally repugnant. The present work provides a fitting conclusion to Dr. Fogel's work in this area..
