The Escape from Hunger and Premature Death, 1700-2100: Europe, America, and the Third World Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, (2006). reprint. orig.wrappers. 23x15cm, xx,191 pp, PAPERBACK. Series: Cambridge Studies in Population, Economy and Society in Past Time, 38.. Minor rubbing. VG. ¶ Nobel laureate Robert Fogel's compelling new study examines health, nutrition and technology over the last three centuries and beyond. Throughout most of human history, chronic malnutrition has been the norm. During the past three centuries, however, a synergy between improvements in productive technology and in human physiology has enabled humans to more than double their average longevity and to increase their average body size by over 50 per cent. Larger, healthier humans have contributed to the acceleration of economic growth and technological change, resulting in reduced economic inequality, declining hours of work and a corresponding increase in leisure time. Increased longevity has also brought increased demand for health care. Professor Fogel argues that health care should be viewed as the growth industry of the twenty-first century and systems of financing it should be reformed. His book will be essential reading for all those interested in economics, demography, history and health care policy" - Publisher's description. As New, Robert Fogel (1926-2013) was a renowned economist best known for research on the role of railways in the economic development of the United States and the importance of slavery as an institution and its economic role in the USA. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics (with Douglass C. North) in 1993 for "Having renewed research in economic history by applying economic theory and quantitative methods in order to explain economic and institutional changes". The current volume is a detailed view of a 38 year period that saw fierce debate concerning the era of slavery in the United States. Dr. Fogel himself (with Stanley Engerman) fueled much of this debate with their controversial work "Time on the Cross" (1974) which argued that slavery was profitable and efficient labor and that economic growth and technologic progress could occur in a deeply flawed and immoral system. The furor that arose went so far in some quarters as to accuse the authors of racism. That work was followed by "Without Consent or Contract: The Rise and Fall of American Slavery" (1989) in which Dr. Fogel presented the context in which slavery arose and the factors which led to its demise. He points particularly to the rise of the abolition movement and the moral climate which led Americans to conclude that slavery was morally repugnant. The present work provides a fitting summary Dr. Fogel's work and the ensuing debates.. By The Book, LCBook number: 46599 USD 325.00 [Appr.: EURO 244 | £UK 209.75 | JP¥ 31364]

Time on the Cross. Two Volumes. Volume I: The Economics of American Negro Slavery. Volume Ii: Evidence and Methods. Boston:, Little, Brown,, 1974. First Edition. Hardcover. 0316287008. Signed By Stanley Engerman on the Ffep Vol. I without Personalization. Two Volumes, the Complete Set. Near Fine Hardback Stated First Edition First Printings in Fine Dust Jackets with Mild Edge Wear. Xviii, 286; Xi, 267 Pp. Near Fine, Stanley Engerman (1936- ) is Professor of Economics and History at the University of Rochester. His major field of interest has been economic history.Robert Fogel (1926-2013) was a renowned economist best known for research on the role of railways in the economic development of the United States and the importance of slavery as an institution and its economic role in the USA. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics (with Douglass C. North) in 1993 for "Having renewed research in economic history by applying economic theory and quantitative methods in order to explain economic and institutional changes". The current volumes set off a fierce debate concerning the era of slavery in the United States. This controversial work argued that slavery was profitable and efficient use of labor and that economic growth and technologic progress could occur in a deeply flawed and immoral system. The furor that arose went so far in some quarters as to accuse the authors of racism. Many denounced the work as "simply shot through with egregious errors" while others wrote "if a more important book about American history has been published in the last decade, I don't know about it". Here we are, decades after their publication, and the word "classic" is often applied to these volumes. They opened up a whole new vista in the discussion of slavery and led to important new research in American economic and social history.
