Flawed Giant: Lyndon Johnson and His Times, 1961-1973
Cary, North Carolina, U.S.A. Oxford Univ Pr on Demand. 1999. (ISBN: 0195132386). Ppbk, 8vo. pp. 754, b/w photographs, "In his sequel to Lone Star Rising, Lyndon Johnson & His Times, 1908-1960, Boston University historian Dallek draws from recently released presidential papers and transcripts, as well as interviews with Johnson proteges such as Bill Moyers, to vividly depict LBJ's tumultuous years as vice-president and president. If not as engaging or evocative as other biographers, Dallek is always objective, chasing the facts whether they lead to the detriment or to the advantage of his troubled protagonist. The book is particularly strong in juxtaposing the magisterial, single-handed architect of sweeping domestic reform in the Great Society with the public-school-educated, provincial legislator from the Texas hill country who felt inadequate when it came to matters of international relations. As Dallek shows, Johnson yielded too often (sometimes against his better instincts, almost always against his own best interests) to Ivy-educated advisers on such problems as Vietnam. Then we have Johnson's private war with Bobby Kennedy, of whom he said: "[Bobby] skipped the grades where you learn the rules of life. He never liked me, and that's nothing compared to what I think of him." All told, Flawed Giant provides a complex yet elegantly rendered portrait of Lyndon Johnson as vice-president, president and man.". Very Good/No Dj.

Lone Star Rising: Lyndon Johnson and His Times, 1908-1960
Oxford University Press, 1991. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Jacket slightly toned. 1991 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author!. 721 pp. "Like other great figures of 20th-century American politics, Lyndon Johnson defies easy understanding. An unrivaled master of vote swapping, back room deals, and election-day skulduggery, he was nevertheless an outspoken New Dealer with a genuine commitment to the poor and the underprivileged. With aides and colleagues he could be overbearing, crude, and vindictive, but at other times shy, sophisticated, and magnanimous. Perhaps columnist Russell Baker said it best: Johnson 'was a character out of a Russian novel.. a storm of warring human instincts: sinner and saint, buffoon and statesman, cynic and sentimentalist.' But Johnson was also a representative figure. His career speaks volumes about American politics, foreign policy, and business in the forty years after 1930. As Charles de Gaulle said when he came to JFK's funeral: Kennedy was America's mask, but this man Johnson is the country's real face. In Lone Star Rising, Robert Dallek, winner of the prestigious Bancroft Prize for his study of Franklin D. Roosevelt, now turns to this fascinating 'sinner and saint' to offer a brilliant, definitive portrait of a great American politician. Based on seven years of research in over 450 manuscript collections and oral histories, as well as numerous personal interviews, this first book in a two-volume biography follows Johnson's life from his childhood on the banks of the Pedernales to his election as vice-president under Kennedy. We see Johnson, the twenty-three-year-old aide to a pampered millionaire Representative, become a de facto Congressman, and at age twenty-eight the country's best state director of the National Youth Administration. We see Johnson, the 'human dynamo,' first in the House and then in the Senate, whirl his way through sixteen- and eighteen-hour days, talking, urging, demanding, reaching for influence and power, in an uncommonly successful congressional career. Dallek pays full due to Johnson's failings -- his obsession with being top dog, his willingness to cut corners, and worse, to get there -- but he also illuminates Johnson's sheer brilliance as a politician, the high regard in which key members of the New Deal, including FDR, held him, and his genuine concern for minorities and the downtrodden. No president in American history is currently less admired than Lyndon Johnson. Bitter memories of Vietnam have sent Johnson's reputation into free fall, and recent biographies have painted him as a scoundrel who did more harm than good. Lone Star Rising attempts to strike a balance. It does not neglect the tawdry side of Johnson's political career, including much that is revealed for the first time. But it also reminds us that Lyndon Johnson was a man of exceptional vision, who from early in his career worked to bring the South into the mainstream of American economic and political life, to give the disadvantaged a decent chance, and to end racial segregation for the well-being of the nation.".

The Lost Peace : Leadership in a Time of Horror and Hope, 1945-1953
New York. N.Y. : Harper 2010. Stated 1st Edition. Description: xii. 420 p. [16] p. of plates : ill. ; 24 cm. Subject: World politics -- 1945-1955. World War. 1939-1945 -- Peace. Cold War. Summary: In a reinterpretation of the postwar years. historian Robert Dallek examines what drove the leaders of the most powerful nations around the globe--Roosevelt. Churchill. Stalin. Mao. de Gaulle. and Truman--to rely on traditional power politics despite the catastrophic violence their nations had endured. The decisions of these men. for better and often for worse. had profound consequences for decades to come. influencing relations and conflicts with China. Korea. the Middle East. and around the globe. This book is a penetrating look at the misjudgments that caused enormous strife and suffering during this critical period. from the closing months of World War II through the early years of the Cold War. The men who led the world at this time executed astonishingly unwise actions that propelled the nuclear arms race and extended the Cold War. Dallek has written a cautionary tale that considers what might have been done differently.--From publisher description. An exceptional copy; fine in an equally fine dw.
