"In 1943 Major-General Orde Wingate startled the military world by his daring raid in command of 77 Brigade into the heart of Japanese-occupied Burma. In t he following year Wingate master-minded an even more ambitious operation, which involved the flying in of about 10,000 men and 1,000 animals behind enemy lines to harass the Japanese and disrupt their communications, with the aid of close t a c t i c a l s upport by USAAF No. 1 Air Commando under Colonel Philip Cochran. 'Chindit' was the name given to these operations and to the men who took part in them, derived from the Burmese word for the mythical beast that guards their pagodas fr om e vi l. Th i s book is a personal account of the 1944 operation by an officer who served on the staff of 111 Brigade. It tells the story of the preparations in central India for this arduous form of warfare, which Wingate called Long Range Pen etr ati on, th e fl ig ht deep into enemy territory and the subsequent campaign of guerrilla operations after the sudden death of Wingate.." Arsenals of folly : the making of the nuclear arms race Simon & Schuster, London, 2008. First Edition, Hardcover, Illustrated by: Photographic. Very Good Condition/Very Good. From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb comes this brilliant account of the post-war superpower arms race, climaxing during the Reagan-Gorbachev decade when the United States and the Soviet Union came within scant hours of nuclear war -- and then nearly agreed to abolish nuclear weapons. In a narrative that reads like a thriller, Rhodes reveals how the Reagan administration's unprecedented arms build-up in the early 1980s led the Soviets to conclude that the U.S. must be preparing for a nuclear war -- only for Reagan, out of deep conviction, to launch the arms-reduction campaign of his second presidential term and set the stage for the famous 1986 summit with Gorbachev in Reykjavik, and the breakthroughs that followed. – dustjacket blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 386 pages. Arsenals of Folly The Making of The Nuclear Arms Race New York, Harper & Row. 2007, First Edition. (ISBN: 9780375414138). Hardcover, 8vo. pp. [3] 383, b/w photographs."Drawing on personal interviews with both Soviet and U.S. participants, and on a wealth of new documentation, memoir literature, and oral history that has become available only in the past ten years, Rhodes recounts what actually happened in the final years of the Cold War that led to its dramatic end. The story is new, compelling, and continually surprising—a revelatory re-creation of a hugely important era of our recent history. ". Very Good/Very Good.
