Numerous "sworn reports" are included under such headings as "Rape," "Violation of a Boy," "Unnatural Usage of a Man," "Overpowering and Murder," "Breach of Morals," "Unnatural Lust," etc. Other sections are entitled "Brothels," "The Venereal Diseases," "The Children of Coloured and White Parents," "The Material Sufferings of Germany," etc.

His abundant explanatory notes compose more than half of each volume's overall text. This first edition classic work contains (16) Satires of Decimus Junius Juvenal (Aquinas) bound with (6) Satires of Aulus Persius Flaccus. Three quarters leather binding over brown card boards, 404pp. Splits along both front and back spine joints, back cover attached by a couple of threads and nearly loose, slight warping to card. Pencil price and notes on front stuckdown, owner nameplate on front stuckdown, tear in margin of last page and marks down inner margin of last page. Internal pages in near very good condition, just a few tiny chips to margins, clean with no loose pages (last page has some tears along its hinges). Collation as follows - blank free endpaper (recto and verso), title page (on recto) with Preparing for the Press Vol III of Thelyphthora on verso, Contents (recto) and errata (verso), pp xxxii (dedication and prefaces to first and second editions) + pp 404 (main book). No back free endpaper. Top half of hinge is split between pages xvi and xvii and there are two half inch wide blank leaves there - it is unclear whether this is a feature of the binding or pages have been removed, but the page numbers are all present. 620g. The author, unnamed, was the Rev Martin Madan, who believed that many of the causes of prostitution etc could be alleviated by the introduction of polygamy. Fair/No Jacket.

G : in Good condition. No dust jacket. Cracked and frayed spine. Later repair. Rubbed and bumped cover. Inscribed on endpapers 'Harry C Manly 1870'. Very slight foxing throughout. Possibley a page missing after contents but before introduction [although according to contents not] .
