Ill.: The Author. This is a slightly battered,but complete,copy of this scarce title.The original digs were made between 1757 & 1773,& written up by the Rev. Faussett.The manuscript & the antiquities came to Joseph Mayer,whose portrait forms the frontispiece.Charles Roach Smith has edited the text from the original manuscript,& supplied notes & an introduction.Externally,the volume has been rebacked,with the original spine laid down to the new one.The corners are bumped & worn.The endpapers are new,though one of the original,yellow,ones remains,with three ownership names.The armorial bookplate of a fourth owner is on the front pastedown.There are numerous marginalia in pink or blue crayon in the text,& most of the twenty fullpage plates at the rear are also annotated in the same hand.Bound in at the rear are adverts. for another work by Charles Roach Smith,& for publications by John Russell Smith [C.R.Smith's relative?].
