¶ "It is good to travel in a buggy with the friend of your heart" Adventures of two young women on vacation, travelling by buggy from the Catskills to the Berkshires. Marie Louise Pool (1841-1898) was born in Massachusetts and moved to Brooklyn in the early 1870s: "Her writing at this time and throughout her entire career focused almost exclusively on life in a small New England village, and the popularity of this type of local-color fiction was just beginning to establish itself at the time. - She had a penchant for seeing and creating characters, both in actions and in speech, who symbolized traditional New England life. Sometimes those characters were people; sometimes they were animals. Always she created them simply and whimsically" (ANB). Pool and her lifelong companion, Caroline M. Branson, later lived in rural Massachusetts
