Publisher's one-half dark brown leather with five raised bands, spine with gilt-lettering and decorations in gilt, over burgundy-colored cloth, burgundy marbled endpapers with matching marbled page edges, folio (37.3 x 26.3 cm). This is the best facsimile reprint of the very rare original edition by Wilhem de Haan (1801-1855) published in Leiden in 1833. This is one of the very first publications that offered the western world a glimpse of the zoological richness of Japanese waters. The specimens illustrated were collected by Siebold in 1823-1829. The plates are of great quality and illustrate many new species. This facsimile reprint was limited to 350 copies - it sold out quickly and has become very difficult to find. Circular ink stamp in Japanese of a former owner on the title page. Leather on spine is a bit cracked in places with repairs made to one outer joint but the leather is still very attractive, the text and plates are bright and clean; a very good copy..
