The Cold and the Dark: The World After Nuclear War Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. W W Norton & Co Inc. 1985. (ISBN: 0393302415). Soft Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. Book, Soft cover. Very good condition. The report of a major conference on the long-term biological consequences of nuclear war. Carl Sagan presents the atmospheric and climactic effects, while Paul Ehrlich summarizes the biological implications. The report concludes that even a relatively small nuclear war could trigger a nuclear winter, producing conditions much worse than previously anticipated; smoke, soot and damage to the ozone layer would blot out sunlight, producing severe and prolonged low temperatures. The report, as well as the conference, intentionally avoided drawing any policy implications from the findings. There may have been good reasons for this, but it nevertheless limits the usefulness of the report. "Consciousness raising" may be achieved, but it would be regrettable if such an important scientific undertaking on the world's most critical problem should not have an impact upon arms control policymakers. Very Good. Pinacle BooksBook number: 062618 USD 18.00 [Appr.: EURO 13.75 | £UK 11.5 | JP¥ 1788] Catalogue: Nonfiction

PAUL FUSCO: RFK - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER New York, Aperture Foundation., 2008, First Edition Thus. (ISBN: 1-59711-079-5) Boards in Pictorial Jacket, Oblong 4to, 224pp, 120 color illustrations. Designed by Astrid Lewis Reedy. "As a staff photographer for Look magazine in 1968, Paul Fusco was commissioned to document all of the events surrounding the funeral of Robert Francis Kennedy. In addition to capturing the thousands of Americans who stood by the railroad tracks to greet the funeral train carrying RFK's coffin, he also photographed the mourners gathered at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, as well as the dramatic night burial in Arlington National Cemetery. In this volume, newly discovered photographs are presented alongside classic images of the funeral train that have been seared into the public consciousness. The book provides a new perspective on this legendary photographer's singular achievement and helps solidify the status of this classic body of work as one of the great efforts in photographic reportage and an incomparable document of this pivotal moment in U.S. history". A pristine copy of the 2008 first Aperture hardbound edition of this supremely moving volume (whose 1999 first Magnum Photos iteration as "RFK Funeral Train" is cited on pages 46-47 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II") BOLDLY SIGNED by Paul Fusco in black on the title page. RFK FUNERAL TRAIN BY PAUL FUSCO - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER New York, Magnum Photos & Umbrage Editions., 2000, First Edition Thus. (ISBN: 1-884167-04-7) Boards in Pictorial Jacket, Oblong 4to, np (132pp), 54 color illustrations. Designed by Astrid Lewis. "On June 8, 1968, Robert Kennedy's coffin was put on a train twenty cars long in New York and taken slowly to Washington, D.C. for burial in the Arlington Memorial Cemetery. Paul Fusco, then a staff photographer for Look, was on that train, and the pictures he took of people who lined the tracks along the way fill this moving book. These emotional photographs, many never-before-seen, remember the urgency and tragedy of Bobby Kennedy's assassination and the moving farewell from hundreds of thousands of people who stood patiently in the searing heat along roadsides down the east coast to watch his funeral train pass slowly by just as Abraham Lincoln's had one hundred and three years before. Essays by Norman Mailer (reporting in 1968 from the funeral) as well as a retelling of the story of the passage of the funeral train by Newsweek editor and RFK biographer Evan Thomas join the tribute given by Robert Kennedy's brother Senator Edward M. Kennedy, to evoke how this man and his vision of America touched people with idealism and humanity". A most handsome copy of the 2000 first Umbrage Editions hardbound printing of this supremely moving volume (whose 1999 first Magnum Photos edition is cited on pages 46-47 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", and this edition on page 37 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and page 19 of "From Fair to Fine 3") BOLDLY SIGNED by Paul Fusco in silver marker on the title page..
