HOLBACH, (PAUL HENRI DIETRICH THIRY, BARON D', 1723-89).
La Politique Naturelle. Ou Discours Sur Les Vrais Principes Du Gouvernement. Par Un Ancien Magistrat.
Londres (i.e. Amsterdam), Marc-Michel Rey, 1773, First edition. Hardcover . Two volumes, octavo. pp (viii), 232; [4], 280. Half-titles present, binder's blanks front and rear. Bound in contemporary tortoiseshell calf, gilt decorative borders to spines, spines with raised bands, labels, gilt ornaments, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, bound-in ribbon bookmark (perished in vol. I). Small chips to foot of spine of vol. I; covers just a little bowed; yellowing to a few leaves in text; "Baron Holbach" very lightly in ink to half-title leaf in vol. II ; else fine, tight in the bindings, hinges not cracked, text clean and fresh. Variant (first printing?) with a period (vs comma) after "Naturelle" on title page, and with the signature marks at bottom centre of pages, and collating a little differently from the other recorded variant. Vercruysse (1773) A2 and A3 describes two variants, listing this one first, but not giving any reason for that order. Tchemerzine VI, 245b. One of several works in which Holbach, the outspoken and influential atheist of the Englightenment, argues for principles of government based solely on social utility and the common good. He advocated the abolition of class privileges, progressive taxation, separation of church and state, religious toleration, secular public education, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech - familiar principles in western democracies today.

Volume I contains on pp 1-47 "Sentiment de Voltaire sur le système de la nature". >> Holbach's most famous book. "The third and properly philosophical stage of Holbach's output began in 1770 with the Système de la nature.. This first-and only-example in the Enlightenment of a comprehensive, unmitigated defense of atheistic materialism was the culmination of a whole trend of ideas already expressed in varying degrees by La Mettrie, Helvétius, Diderot, and others. It caused much consternation in France, not only among spokesmen for the official faith but among the deistic philosophes as well..Système de la nature..defines man as a product entirely of nature, subject to the laws governing the physical universe, which, in turn, constitutes the whole of reality. The soul, or spiritual substance, is an illusion; the moral and intellectual attributes of man are simply his organic machine considered in certain of its special, less visible operations. Since sensibility is a primary function of the animal organism, all our higher faculties are derived ultimately from the different forms that sensation takes" - Encyclopedia of Philosophy IV , pp 49-51. "Holbach's influence was perhaps never very great, but the confident dogmatism, and the comprehensiveness of the Système de la nature, which even provoked Voltaire to reply in defense of religion, have ensured its survival as the bible of materialism." - PMM 215. Vercruysse (1780) A1.
