Voor Ficino, grote inspirator van de Italiaanse Renaissance, was de onsterfelijkheid en goddelijkheid van de ziel de basis van de waardigheid van de mens, wiens vervulling ligt in de terugkeer tot zijn bron. Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) gaf het spirituele en intellectuele denken een sterke impuls. In zijn brieven ontmoeten we de liefde en de aandacht die hij naar iedereen uitstraalde. Meer dan aan enig ander mens hebben wij het aan Ficino te danken dat de werken van Plato en andere door Plato geïnspireerde auteurs bekend werden onder een grote lezerskirng, ook in latere eeuwen. De problemen waarmee de mensen in Italie gedurende de renaissance te kampen hadden, waren talrijk. Vergelijk het met de problemen die wij heden ten dage kennen. Grote delen van Europa werden vermalen tussen nieuwe politieke en sociale stromingen en het totale maatschappelijke en sociale leven dreigde in deze chaos ten onder te gaan. Velen die diep over dit alles nadachten, zochten in hun verwarring en onrust raad en ondersteuning bij Marsilio Ficino. En in zijn brieven gaf hij hun die raad, sprak hen moed in en vermaande ze, als hij het nodig vond. Door de grote wijsheid die zijn brieven uitstralen heeft hij niet alleen in zijn tijd, maar ook nu nog, vele grote geesten in het westen beïnvloed. Hij leidde de door Cosimo de'Medici gestichte Plato-academie en vertaalde o.a. Plato's werken in het Latijn. Dat Plato voor ons toegankelijk is, danken wij in eerste instantie aan Ficino. Als vriend en raadgever correspondeerde hij met velen van zijn tijdgenoten. Die brieven, waaruit hier een selectie, zijn doortrokken van de liefde en de genegenheid die Ficino uitstraalde naar alle mensen. Citaat uit de inleiding: 'Wat is de betekenis van deze brieven vandaag? Voor een maatschappij die richting verloren lijkt te hebben en die zich laat beïnvloeden door luiheid, hebzucht, geweld en corruptie, hebben zij een actuele klank.(...) De brieven herinneren ons eraan dat deze ondeugden het gevolg zijn van dwaasheid en onwetendheid, en dat de vervulling van de Mens is gelegen in zijn terugkeer tot de Bron'.
