TILLEMONT, LOUIS-SEBASTIEN LE NAIN DE (1637-1698)
Vie de Saint Louis Roi de France. Publiée pour la Première Fois d'Après le Manuscrit de la Bibliothèque Royale et Accompagnée de Notes et d'Éclaircissements Par J. De Gaulle [6 volumes]
Paris, Jules Renouard, 1847-1851. Tillemont was a French historian and priest. He received his education at Port Royal in the Petites Écoles and then at Beauvais in the seminary. Later, in 1667, he again resided at Port Royal and, though a member of the Jansenist community, he avoided the controversies associated with it. During these times, he collaborated with others on several historical projects, including an edition of patristic texts. He eventually relocated to Tillemont when the Port Royal community was dispersed in 1679, spending his time there in pious practices and in the study of history. Thus he spent two years putting together notes on Saint Louis for Lemaistre de Lacy, who, however, did not live long enough to use them. It was only later, in 1847, that these notes were published under the auspices of the Société de l'histoire de France and the editorship of J. De Gaulle (though a pirated edition was made in 1688 by Filleau de la Chaise). Tillemont is generally regarded as a most thorough and accurate historian. 8vo (15.5cm x 23.5cm). Bound in full red morocco, gilt-stamped emblem to both boards with blind decorative fillet and inside dentelles. 5 compartments to spine, gilt title and volume numbers. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Bookplate of 'Joseph M. Gleason' on front paste-down endpapers. Library numbers in black on spines. Light foxing throughout. A beautifully bound set in very good condition.
