B&W and Color Illustrations; This book is in Very Good+ condition, and is lacking the accompanying box. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The light blue cloth covers have gilt lettering and dark blue and white decoration on the front cover and spine. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing, along with some beginning wear. There is a small ding to the top front corner of the book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a small square of glue residue to the top corner of the front endpaper where a sticker was removed. Included are 42 full page illustrations, of which 8 are in full color, along with a full color frontispiece. "Christy first attracted attention with his realistic illustrations and several articles as a combat artist during the Spanish–American War that included the Battle of Las Guasimas, the Battle of El Caney and the Battle of San Juan Hill, published in Scribner's, Harper's, and Leslie's Weekly magazines, and in Collier's Weekly. Christy gained especial prominence with the series, Men of the Army and Navy, and a portrait of Colonel Roosevelt that appeared on the cover of his Rough Riders series published in Scribner's. These illustrations propelled Christy to national prominence. From this, he decided to turn away from war and painting men in uniform. Instead, he yearned for beauty and created the "Christy Girl", redefining the portrayal of women in America through his illustrations and portraits. Undated copy, though the numeral (date?) 1575 appears on title page; estimated to have been published c.1890-1920. In grey cloth-covered, bevel-edge covers w/titling information and decorations in gilt on cover; faded but readable lettering on spine. With color illustration pasted to front cover. Interior printed on quality coated papers. All three edges in gilt, the top edge's gilt has faded. With small holes in front pastedown and front free endpaper. The edges of the covers are somewhat worn, and the cloth at spine has split; but the volume is firm and in good shape. With charming inked presention remarks on front free endpaper; otherwise a clean copy. Mr. Longfellow's 1858 long-form poem has been a much-loved bit of Americana since publication; combined with the artwork of Mr. Dixon this makes for a very attractive volume. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 159 pages.
