Beloved Community: The Cultural Criticism of Randolph Bourne, Van Wyck Brooks, Waldo Frank, & Lewis Mumford.
Chapel Hill, NC; and London, U.K.: The University of North Carolina Press, (1990). INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY CASEY BLAKE - Octavo, softcover bound in printed wrappers. The binding is slightly bumped with light spotting to the front wrap & with a light gray mark to the rear cover. xvi, [1] leaf, 365 & [1] pages. There is a small stain to the fore-edge. Very good. First edition, wraps issue. From the library of artist Alfonso Ossorio, inscribed to him by the author on the half-title and signed in ink "Casey Blake". Laid in is a typed letter signed to Ossorio from Blake, sending him the book: "You might want to think of it as an exchange -- albeit an unequal one -- for the lovely painting you gave me many years ago...."Alfonso A. Ossorio [1916-1990] was an abstract expressionist artist born in Manila, Phillipines. At the age of fourteen, he moved to the United States, becoming a citizen in 1933. His work was influenced by his friend Jackson Pollock, whose work he admired and collected, and by the "art brut" of Jean Dubuffet whom he met in Paris in 1950. In the 1950s he began creating assemblages, which he called "congregations" and he was represented along with Dubuffet and many other artists in the 1961 exhibition "The Art of Assemblage" at the Museum of Modern Art, which introduced this form of art to the general public for the first time. He died in New York City in 1990.
