This is a history of the black Jews of Ethiopia who existed in what was known as Ethiopia even before the destruction of the first Temple, and who until the 17th-century flourished. For the better part of the 19th, and indeed the 20th century a group of people practising their religion in a way that was historically correct were denied recognition by their fellow Jews until 1973 when the Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel declared unequivocally that they were Jews.
